This was a weekend to forget for Robby Wolfgang and both of his sprint car teams.
With high hopes going into the weekend, Wolfgang and the Smith 33 would return to Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, IA looking to improve on their last showing at the track. Wolfgang's night would end early, though. "I was running 3rd in the heat race and that's when the motor expired. We had an awesome car and I felt like we were going to have a good chance in the A main. It was just one of those nights though, I can't thank Bill and Pat enough for giving me such a great car to race every weekend," explained Wolfgang.
Saturday brought new hopes and a new attitude. "When you race two or three times a weekend you can't let a bad night at the track affect your outlook on the next race," Wolfgang said, as he and the Williams 7k would make their weekly trip to Knoxville Raceway with both the 410 and 360. "Knoxville is letting you run both classes now so we thought it would be a good time to get a feel for the 360 car before the 360 Nationals," explained Wolfgang.
However, those plans soon changed as the 410 motor would expire in time trials, leaving only the 360 ready to race. "It was a tough break, we are finally getting a good feel for the 410 program, but it seems like we can't get the bad luck off of our back, hopefully it's gone after this weekend," said Wolfgang.
Wolfgang would start 2nd and finish 3rd in the heat race, lining him up 14th for the 360 A-Main. As the dust would settle, Wolfgang would cross the line 11th. "The car wasn't great but I think we learned some things on what not to do for the 360 nationals, so I am really looking forward to August," Wolfgang explained.
Sunday was back in the Smith 33 at Huset's Speedway. Timing in 6th quick, Wolfgang lined up 4th for his heat race. After passing a car, Wolfgang was in 3rd looking at 2nd place when disaster struck. "All I know is that I set the car in the corner and then something happened and it biked over the right front. It was a pretty crazy crash and I just thought to myself, man what a way to end the weekend, two blown up motors and now a wrecked car. But after we got it back to the pits looked it over, it wasn't that bad at all, so we put it back together and raced the A main," stated Wolfgang. After starting 10th in the A, Wolfgang was up to 6th when he had to pull in and finish the weekend with another DNF. "The car felt great and I was really started to get in the grove but there was a vibration in the drive line and I didn't want to hurt anything else this weekend, so I pulled in," Wolfgang said.
This weekend will see Robby at Knoxville Raceway on Saturday night in the Williams 7k, as well as Sunday night in the Smith 33 at Huset's Speedway.
