"HOLLYWOOD" JENKINS GETS HIS STAR
By: John Lemon
Tulsa, Oklahoma (May 30, 2010)
Travis "Hollywood" Jenkins got his first 2010 star trophy by winning Saturday nights Oil Capital Racing Series sprint car main event at the semi-banked track at Mid-America Speedway in South Coffeyville, Okalhoma. "Hollywood" started outside front row along side Inola's rookie sensation Terry Easum. Driving the Premier Homes / Camelot Homes and Mid-America Speedway Maxim, Hollywood outran Easum to the first turn and held a lead he would never relinquish. "I didn't know who was behind me near the end but I figured Passmore (Jamie) must have been there" said an elated Jenkins afterwards. "He (Passmore) would have had to run over tires or loose stuff to try and get by me. I wasn't going to give up my spot to anybody" said Jenkins, who had Kevin Garris and Matt Thomason working as dual crew chiefs for the night.
With the track tacking rubber, Jenkins and Easum battled for the top spot with Kyle Clark, Passmore and Rafe Essary in tow. Passmore, in his G.A.P. Roofing Wesmar / Eagle mount, would overtake Clark in turn four of the fourth lap. The leaders would then encounter traffic five laps latter, which only aided in keeping an already close battle even tighter. The feature race was smooth going then, on lap 12, trouble arose. Danny Smith was working to stay in the top ten when he and Tim Kent made contact in turn one. Smith suffered front end damage and thus the first yellow of the race was displayed. The restart would see Hollywood Jenkins on the point with Easum, Passmore, Essary, Jeffery Newell, Clark, Kent, Joe Bob Lee, Fred Mattox and Johnny "Hot Rod" Kent as your top ten runners.
On the restart, Easum would spin to a stop in turn two and the yellow would halt action once more. Easum's J&J machine suffered damage and he would not be able to restart thus moving the field up a position for the next restart. Four laps latter, Mattox would slip by Lee for seventh. Another four laps latter, J. Kent would spin to a stop in turn four and the track would go yellow again. A trio of laps was in the books after a restart when Oklahoma City's Shayla Waddell would spin in turn three and rested up against the guardrail.
Once action resumed, it was Jenkins and Passmore who both began to show their fellow racers they were the two who would determine the win as they began to distance themselves from the field in rapid manner. On lap 23, the final stoppage of the race came in the way of a red flag for the dual flipping cars of J. Kent and Kevin Cummings. Both drivers were OK but were done for the rest of the race. Once again, Jenkins and Passmore would leave their peers in arrears and decide the final outcome themselves. On the last lap, Clark would slip off the preferred racing groove in turn four and allow T. Kent and Mattox to maneuver by.
Jenkins held on by one and a half car lengths over Passmore at the checkered flag with Essary, Newell and T. Kent taking the top five spots. Rounding out the top ten were: Mattox, Clark, Lee, David Stephenson and David Dutton.
The next event for the OCRS sprint cars will be Saturday June 12th at the Oklahoma Sports Park in Ada, Oklahoma for the second annual running of the "Harold Leep Jr Memorial".
