For those who saw the violent crash of Tobey Sampson in the Lightning Sprint Car main last night. I just got a call from him and he is doing OK. Sore left arm and jaw. Of course, his legendary sense of humor is still intact despite the pain. He may take a trip to the hospital today to get checked out.
If you missed it, Tobey had led all way, but going into turn three on the 13th lap another car got into him and sent him on a ride. Tobey set a PAS altitude record for a Lightning Sprint Car. When it came down, it was an extremely hard hit and stopped rather abruptly. That may have been the good part as with the speed and the altitude, I thought he was going to end up in turn three on the half mile (they were racing on the quarter mile).
Dan Hillberg, Tobey's car owner and a former SCRA and USAC/CRA driver, won the A main (Tim Moody was dq'd for not going to tech). It was his first ever A main win in over 30 years of open wheel racing. Very well deserved and could not happen to a nicer guy.
