In August when they have the southern Iowa speedweek always have the Mr Sprintcar award for the driver that did the best in the 360 Nationals, the front row challenge, the ultimate challenge and the Knoxville Nationals. I think they should name this award after Jesse. He could run anything anywhere. I think he even won the ultimate challenge againest the USAC boys. I will start the petition to rename the award " The Jesse Hockett Mr. Sprintcar Award".

This would be a fitting name for the award since he did drive everything. If my memory serves me right didn't he win this past years ultimate challenge in a photo finish?

I thought the same thing but rather the Ultimate Challenge be named after Jesse. Wasn't the first year they raced there named the Danny Young Memorial??

I think naming a award would be much better, because Hockett was so versatile. Also I believe memorial races are suppose to end after 10 years.

Yes he did win the Ultimate Challenge, I was cheering for him and it was neat watching him after he won, he was so excited to win, not for the money. I think it was maybe Dave Darland(?) that was racing with Jesse right at the end of that race.

Great idea. Just call it the Jesse Hockett award, it recognizes the driver with most pts accumulated in Iowa's sprint biggies.

You're likely to get some sponsorships for the Jesse Hockett award that would make it worthwhile to the racers... like the purse money doesn't do enough.

You could also consider having a different award that recognizes versatility all year long... I'd pay $5 to vote if the proceeds go to his family this year and the charity or racing team of their choice next year on. Reward the little teams that go out of their way to make "way too many" races. Teams that run winged & topless. That or if Jesse had a charitable organization he believed in we could support it in his honor.

Lots of proper ways to recognize the Rocket without being self-indulgent or doing it for the wrong reasons.

We have already began thinking of a way to honor this great young man. We will definitely do something but feel we need to talk to his family before we announce anything for sure.

He actually should have won the UC a few more times and lost it once by only a few inches!

I like Opperman fans idea, as the "Mr. Sprintcar" title is awarded to the most versatile driver of the week and there was no one more versatile than Jesse.

We will miss him greatly as promoters, as it is tough to top his excitement after a win (especially his awesome donuts!) and his fan friendliness but we will miss him most as a person.

any honor, any award, any track, winner circle, car, grandstand, lap at the chili bowl....ANYTHING to honor Jesse would be awesome. I'd like to see something like how baseball does jackie robinson day, and all the players wear 42....I think all the wings could be 77 and tailtanks stay the original # for scoring. Nothing better than to see a bunch of rockets on the dirt ovals across the states at the same time....

i have thought hard about a way to remember jesse and do something in his name and all of the ideas posted on this thread are great ideas and i really hope they happen. i am part of the fire crew at the knoxville raceway and i thought about talking to brian stickle and seeing if there was any way we could make the knoxville non-wing nationals the jesse hockett knoxville non-wing nationals. i looked forward to seeing him put on a show during this event all year long. like i said though anything that gets done to honor this amazing person is well worth it. he was a spectacular driver and an even better person. i know he will be greatly missed by his many many fans! godspeed jesse!! r.i.p.

That would be great! I remember talking to Jesse last year when the non-wing race got rained out.....he was so bummed. He didn't run well (as usual) during the 360 Nat's portion....but he was ready to leave his mark on that track I can assure you that. Luckily he carried it over to Osky and put on a great show. I remember talking to Jesse later on in the fall/winter and asked him how much he wanted to take the wing off and gas it up around K'ville....he says "oh man, RRRRREAL BAD", of course he had that little smirky grin but you could almost look into his eyes and feel like you were at the track. That would be a GREAT honor, hope it can be done. Tbird
