Perfect time of the year for north Texas. A great time to get the cars and drivers some track time to hold you over until spring.

Mike , If possible , going to try and make it down on Oct. 17th Sunday afternoon, be at Dallas for the Winter Nationals that Fri. & Sat. but really going to try and make it to this deal on Sun. if all possible.

Ran Lawton Sat. night and had another DNF , can't seem to have any luck right now, but go try it again this Sat. night for their season pts. finale, I think they might have a front row starting spot for us.

JD,

Do you have any idea where there is one of those narrow bodied cars might be? Like the old Singing 5 or Wayne Cox type cars. Hope to see you at Texhoma Speedway October 17th.

David,

I already knew that. I talked to Harold at Cowtown last Saturday. Have you got #84 running yet?

Mike, The only place I would know to even look for one similar to that is maybe Arnold Red Elk or Pete Kern both out of Cache, I remember Arnold use to still have his frames from his Super Mod in a field out behind his house out west of town on Lee Blvd. and Red Elk Rd., he had a narrow body like Wayne Cox had and ran it very little, not sure who he got it from then had another car he bought from I think if what Gene Burk once told me a long time ago that he bought a car from Bubs Fenner from W.F. Tx. and ran it till he quit racing , Gene use to help him some back in the mid 70's along with Shady Mc., I remember also Pete Kern south of Cache use to have his ol Super sitting out behind his house but now that was way back when and have not been by there in years , they may have moved them or gotten rid of them, I know Bill Cates had his ol Super out back behind his house out on 82nd St. for a while and went by there this past Spring and noticed it was not there any longer and as well a couple of Mini Stocks that his boy ran several years back at Lawton Speedway and I guess crashed them as well and they must have hauled them off.

I just wonder if Avant Bros. still has that ol Nance that Johnny Stinnett drove, they are down by Grandfield and heck maybe Johnny told me about 5 or so years ago when I ran across him at Lawton that Ducker got rid of all of it , just cannot remember. Now that car would be nice to have and restore.

I was talking to Angie Ewell on Facebook, which is Bob Ewell's daughter here recently and she has a bunch of ol pics of her dad cars through out his racing career , pretty good pics of cars he had from early 70's till last year which now he runs a Late Model , really like the Barnett cars he had and built with Jerry Barnett back in the late 70's and early 80's, guess that really was when the modern era 4 bar car replaced the Springer front end and then he hooked up with Ry-Son Oil and Larry Witt and Nance and well Race track and NCRA Championships for the guy and even a USA Sprint Car win.

I was telling Angie that I still have the original "Bullet" Bob Ewell T shirt from 78/79 when Steve Branch of Branch's Discount Auto Supply use to sponsor Ewell along with a bunch of other T's from that era and most are in great condition , hell I even have a Ry-Son Shirt as well, but most fond of the original shirt when he was still #18 and to me it will always be 18 , but everyone else will identify with # 85. Sorry to ramble just talking to Angie and seeing those pics were just to cool.

JD,

I know that you and Rusty were great fans of Bob Ewell back in those days. Which #18 was your favorite? The #18 yellow car from 1977 or the #18 white car from 1978? Both were Stanton built cars right? I just can't believe that all those supers and modifieds just disappeared. I know it has been quite some time since these great cars ran, but what happened to them all?

Heck Mike, the orange/yellow 18 , white 18 Stanton car or the Sprint Tail Barnett (Barney) car, they were all cool to a 14 yr. old kid and this kid got to go down and spend a week with "The Bullet" and hang around his shop and that right there is where I knew I at least wanted to get a race car, thought it was the coolest deal.

Tune on it all week , go out on a Friday or Saturday and see what your tunin would get ya and guess I have had the sickness ever since.

Not sure what happend to the Super Mod chassis, guess guys never thought of keeping them or hanging on to them, but I bet a lot of them wished they had them now.

I know those Stanton cars were the coolest looking cars to me with the set back cage and when Ewell had his white one , another guy down in Dallas named David Flanagan got one just like Ewell's , I mean exactly , same components and white and black lettering and only difference was his # was 81 , Bob drove it several times at Dallas and Lawton and got a couple of A feature wins in it. Got pics of the white 18 car , have more that I did not put on the site here.

JD,

Rusty took a classic photo of you standing Bob Ewell's car at the Hutch Nationals in 1978 with a good old red shop rag hanging out of your rear pocket. Those were good ole days.

Mike, I just sent Angie Ewell, Bob's daughter about 10 pics of her dad's cars from back in the late 70's /early 80's , was thrilled to get them, the White Stanton and Orange/Yellow paint scheme and even some shots of John Ewell's first Super Mod as well and some of the Ry-Son #85 years, me and her met up on facebook recently and been talking about the days gone by back then and I told her about this site to come and look at pics of her dad race cars , Seen some pics of her dad present day and can't believe the guy is in his 60's but still wheels a Late Model and still looks like he could step into a Sprinter and run up front.

When I was a young and up and coming J.D. in my early teenage years, he was my hero and thought the guy walked on water and he was and still is a hell of a race car driver in my opinion and his brother John was a good shoe as well.

Mike,

We have the Barnett that is the sister car to Bob's. That will be our next project.I think we'll even copy Bob's orange/yellow paint scheme.

I have some pics of em all and be glad to send em to ya if ya like, Are you going to do the Sprint Tail Tank Barney car with the bent 6 pt. cage bracing?? This car had the more convetional style hood on it unlike the Wolfie hood which most of them they sold came with later.

I always wondered if Barnett would of stayed around what the Chassis Competition would of been like in the Midwest in the 100" deal.

Sold a few of those Barney cars back then Freddie Street W.F.Tx., Jim Usleton Temple,Ok., Bob Waller Tulsa, Danny Shouse OKC , Bob McCutcheon Tulsa had Barney's, ones I know of for sure up around this area. Like I mentioned above that Wolfgang hood was the popular thing back then as well and most all those guys mentioned above had the Wolfie style hood ,like on the Speedway 4x car.Would like to have one of those hoods today and restore it on this non down tube Stealth car I have. Just wonder if it would look good on it?.

We will be using the sprint tail. We have a Brand New Wolfgang hood for it. We found a guy who has Barnett's original hood mold. It came out perfect, no junk at all.
