Friday night's race at Santa Maria brought a finish unlike anything I've ever seen - Bud Kaeding flipped on the front stretch while coming to the line, stopping inches from the finish and giving the win to Tommy Tarlton. Why do I brave long drives, cold weather and blasts of dirt for sprint car racing? Races like Friday night are the answer.

I wrote something about the race for Examiner.com today. Races like that make me wish there was racing every night of the week.

I sure wish we could have had more of you fellow hosers swing by our RV compound we had lots of BBQ and plenty of refreshing cocktails to go around. Hit me up next time your up this way and we can shoot the bull. For my brother and I its our shortest trip to a winged race we make all year... 3 miles door to track entrance. Sure beats the 7.5 hrs in the RV to Chico or the multi day trek to Knoxville. Smile

Ocean Sprints ruling on finish at Santa Maria Speedway

By Gary Thomas

Watsonville, CA – May 4, 2010…After a wild and hectic finish this past Friday night at the Santa Maria Speedway the Ocean Sprint Car Series has ruled that Campbell's Bud Kaeding will be placed 14th in the official rundown, as was the original ruling.

Kaeding was leading the race coming off the final corner, but got together with a lapped car and flipped down the front stretch. Officials at Santa Maria Speedway ruled that Kaeding did not cross the flag stand.

After a back and forth review of the outcome Ocean Sprints promoter John Prentice has determined that Kaeding will in fact be moved back to 14th in the final finish, due to Santa Maria Speedway rules stating, "Video tapes and SMS video replays will in no way influence or change the decisions by track officials."

"The officials made the call that Bud Kaeding did not cross the finish line and the scorers and flagman also said the same thing, so that is what the final ruling will be," said Prentice.

Tommy Tarlton was the winner of the main event and will lead the Ocean Sprint Car Series presented by Taco Bravo into its next event this Friday night at Ocean Speedway.

I glad to see that the ocean speedway staff had a clear view as to where the car was when it landed and where it was when the speedway tow truck hooked up to it. I guess it didn't cross under the watchful eyes of experts like them. This leads to my first question. Where in the hell is the line at Santa Maria Speedway? I was standing right next to the car when three different "Experts" officials were asked where the line was and there was three different answers. I felt like I was at the DMV if that tells you anything. There is no line on the infield, track, or the bottom of the flag stand. Someone holding there arm out straight saying "The line is here" isn't official enough for me. They don't have transponders so how does anyone know if the field was scored correctly or if one of the lapped cars magically finished on the lead lap. My next question is if video evidence is good enough to over turn rulings in court, how come its not good enough for Ocean Speedway officials? If it was indeed over turned by Santa Maria Speedway and made official, and that is the track with this so called "rule" than Ocean officials should have no problem with that. Just for future reference, maybe the officials on a track like Santa Maria should chalk the line on the infield and under the flag stand before the race, so situations like this aren't left to be settled by the "experts".

so according to you, there is no clear cut identification of where the finish line is located. yet you seem to be trying to say that video should be used to make a ruling. just where does the video show the car going over the finish line, if you don't know where it is. you say that video should be good enough for the ocean officials, well if it is or if it is not is not doesn't seem to matter if the santa maria track rules say it can't be used. was the guy walking around buds car with the head phones and white pants and clip board right after it stopped, and before it was moved, an ocean official or santa maria official? he seemed to be some sort of official and he seemed to be looking at where the car landed and towards the flag stand. it says the flagman didn't think the car crossed the line, isn't he an official? i would think he would have a good idea where the finish line is and what crossed it. you are correct that the finish line should be clearly marked. also you say three different officials gave three different opinions of where they thought the finish line was. how many of those opinions put the car over the line? while i think it would be wise for the track to start using tran sponders, don't they race there every week? you would think they would know where the finish line is.

First the official issue, Apparently if you read another thread on this topic in Norcal Sprintcars one of your fellow "Hosers" thinks it is an ocean official with the clipboard and white pants and even calls him by name. I don't know the officials at Santa Maria so I couldn't tell you. Though that is a scary thought due to the fact that there was a race at ocean that night with the wingless and stocks. Hmmmm... I wonder who was officiating that. As for the video, if it was clear enough for the promoter down there to over turn the whole thing on Saturday and it's something they don't do, I am going out on a limb here and going to say that the video must have been very clear. Now to the other question, the guy with the "White pants and clip board" said he crossed the line and so did another guy down there with head phones. The other two were looking for line and still maybe doing the same, good luck to them by the way and go ahead and email me when they do. If the initial ruling right away wasn't him over the line do you think he would have gotten out of his car the way he did right after tearing it up?? Come on it's not like he won the gold cup. He and everyone else was told down there initially he crossed.

i have heard that ocean had one or possibly two officials travel to santa maria. i hardly think that ocean speedway couldn't manage to have the rest of their staff cover for who ever was with the taco bravo cars. if everyone thought that the car crossed the line, then why is it reported by john prentice that the officials , scorers, and the flagman all agreed the car didn't cross the line? as far as the video, at least what i have seen, it isn't conclusive enough to reverse any ruling, no matter what it might have been in the first place. it would still be a judgement call. also since it has been pointed out that santa maria has a policy of not using video to influence or change the decisions of officials, it shouldn't matter what the video showed. also i see where you posted this on another thread "That guy you see with the white pants and the clip board in the video might as well been at the hot dog stand.. He had no idea where the line was..... ". yet now you use his opinion to try to prove your point. maybe the view of the finish line was better from the the hot dog stand than you originaly thought. i don't know but you now seem to have regard for that opinion. like i said in the other thread, i am sure some people were disappointed when the original call was changed, but you didn't hear any complaining at the first call or when when bud was put up front. so why the complaining now? all that has happened is the original call has been upheld. i also have another question. you say the promoter down there changed the call. is it his place to change the call that affects an out of town series? was it done in cooperation with the out of town series?

oh i now see my question has been answered by the ocean speedway promoter on another thread:

"The officials, scorers and flagman ALL agreed that Bud DID NOT cross the line. The Promoter of Santa Maria made the change Saturday morning all by himself to the surprise of everyone. The change was made based on the video clip that is on the home page of Santa Maria web site."
