you mean a crew member is paid? LOL
I would have to guess that very few crew members are being paid in cash. Some crew chiefs receive a salary, etc, but most crews just receive a pit pass, drinks, and food.

For a full time mechanic (not car or crew chief, only mechanic) I'd say the going rate is probably in the $18-22K range per season for a National-type series (ASCS, USAC, etc.). WOO pay may be better, but I don't know. Now, this is for a full time position. Full time in this business usually equates to 80+ hours per week, especially during race season, so you'd have to decide for yourself whether that is "fair" or not. If you're classified as a full time "employee" of the team, then they should have an accountant taking care of taxes, Social Security, etc. If you're classified as a "contract" employee, then you'll probably get a 1099 at the end of the year.
These are my guesses, anyway.

Isn`t a 1099 what you get if you have like a 401k or a pension plan and you take money out? It show how much you took out and how much taxes were taken out. I thought you get a w2 that show social security, pay, tax state and federal, how much you paid into a 401k? I remember when bobby allen would pay some guy 150.00 per week for helping him.

If you pay "someone" over $600.00 in a year you should provide them with a 1099 form.
It is "miscellaneous income" so it is up to the individual to claim it when they file taxes.
Just like a W2, you must provide it no later than January 31st.
I wonder how "few" actually do this?
Years ago, it wasn't a problem. I would think it is taken more seriously today.
I'm so old I can remember when guys raced like outlaws...before there were outlaws..and they might one or two guys who went along...just becaused they enjoyed racing. A loaf of white bread and one pound of bologna would last for.............about one hour!

their are some of us that do make a living working on race cars. pay totaly depends on what experience you have.but to answer your question $500-1250 a week.working on race cars is done for the love of racing not the pay check

So by paying your mudscrapers way into the pits for about let's say 5 hrs of work, pit pas is 45.00 bucks (chico ca) = 9.00 per hr. great pay while having fun. Add food a drinks on top and that not bad for having a good time on someone else's dime.

About six years ago a family member was offered a crew position with one of the top WoO teams. The position was considered a "tire & maintenance" position. Mounting & dismounting tires, cleaning the car & parts at the car wash, changing the oil & filters, cleaning the injectors, keeping the hauler clean & organized and most importantly, he HAD to have a CDL to help driver the rig. The pay offered was $300 per week, free uniforms & t-shirts, hotels paid for, food & drink at the track paid for, paid travel back & forth to his home town once a month, and a free place to stay near the race shop which was about half way across the United States from where he lived.
After debating and really stressing over it he asked the team owner for $500 per week and the owner offered $350, so my relative turned them down.
About two years later the same family member was offered a position with an ASCS team for basically the same position and benefits, but he was offered $800 per week! So I guess it depends on what the owner wants to pay and what you will be doing for the team. Crew chiefs obviously get paid quite a bit more. One friend of mine was a crew chief with a WoO team about 3 years ago and he was paid $800 per week plus a percentage of of the car's winnings. He had a place to live paid for, his food & laundry paid for, free uniforms and other benefits. He said at the end of the year he made around $80,000, however he also said if you figured it out by the hour, he made less than $5.00 per hour! LOL! It wasn't uncommon for him to be up at 7am in the morning and not go to bed until 2-3am on race weekends, and of course all the driving and rebuilding wrecked race cars on the road. Very little free time for a crew chief. But, he wasn't married and life on the road is what he wanted at the time.
