Dave Becker Blasts To First UMSS Win During 2010 Season Opener at Kopellah Speedway

St. Croix Falls, WI

By: Greg Parent (4-23-10)

What a difference one year makes! Last year when the Upper Midwest Sprintcar Series (UMSS) kicked off their inaugural season, Dave Becker suffered some serious misfortune with a hard crash. As the UMSS opened their second season on Friday night April 23 at the Kopellah Speedway, Becker's 2010 season got off to a great start with his first UMSS feature win. Becker had to hold off Jerry Richert, Jr over the course of the final 18 green flag laps of the 20 lap feature event to earn the $1,000 top prize. Stated a very happy Becker, "I saw Jerry underneath me early in the race, and I knew I had to get up on the wheel and be near-perfect every lap if I wanted to finish in front of him." The Belle Plain, MN driver went on to say, "I did not get to race very many times last year, so I was hoping for a good consistent run in the feature race tonight." That certainly was the case, as Becker put together 20 solid and consistent laps to earn his first-career UMSS victory. The series was able to get the opening night completed just a short time before the predicted rainfall arrived.

With 2009 UMSS Rookie of the Year, Cody Hahn, and Dave Becker pacing the thirteen car starting grid, the first attempt to go green ended with the first caution when Brad Barickman drifted high in turn two, rode the wall, and then stopped at the exit of the turn. Barickman was pushed to the work area, but the Ron Olson-owned car sustained enough damage that it could not continue. On the second attempt to start the race, Johnny Parsons III spun in turn three and collected 2010 rookie candidate Ronnie Erickson. Parsons was able to restart, but Erickson's car was towed to the pits for the second time during the evening. Earlier in the night, Erickson's driveline let go as he was lining up for his heat race.

The third time was the charm, as the feature race got underway with Becker blasting to the early lead. Richert got by Hahn with Sye Anderson and Brandon Allen close behind. The third and final caution blinked on for a Kevin Nickel spin in turn two with two laps completed. With a double-file restart behind Becker, Richert was quickly challenging him for the lead. The race would run non-stop to the finish with Becker, Richert and Hahn pulling away from the rest of the field a bit. As Richert looked to dive underneath Becker on a couple of occasions, Becker was able to hold him off.

As the laps clicked off quickly, Anderson, inaugural 2009 UMSS Champion Leigh Thomas, Joseph Kouba, and 2010 rookie Andy Jones kept close together in the battle for the fifth through eighth positions. With Becker continuing to keep Richert, a six-time UMSS feature winner in 2009, at bay, Cody Hahn closed in on the lead duo. Just past the half-way mark, the top three cars had put some distance on fourth place Brandon Allen. As Becker put Kevin Nickel a lap down, Richert once again drew close in the closing laps. Dave Becker was able to hold off Jerry Richert Jr to open the 2010 UMSS season with a victory. Cody Hahn finished third with Brandon Allen in fourth. The entertaining battle for fifth went to Sye Anderson followed by Leigh Thomas, Andy Jones, Joseph Kouba, Johnny Parsons III and Jesse Smith to round out the top ten finishers.

Earlier in the evening, the SprintSource.com Ultimate Sprint Race (heat #1) win went to Cody Hahn. The Driverwebsites.com Ultimate Sprint Race (heat #2) saw Brad Barickman the victor. During the second heat, something broke on Scotty Thiel's sprinter in turn three, sending the southern Wisconsin MSA driver hard into the concrete wall. Thiel's sprinter flipped once, coming to rest right-side up with a stuck throttle. Thiel was able to get the car shut off, but a small fire needed to be extinguished. Under the red, Leigh Thomas' car developed a fuel leak and caught on fire. Both cars were out of the race with Thiel's badly damaged sprinter done for the evening. Thomas would return to run and finish two more races.

In the first Mastell Brothers Trailer Service Challenge race, Jerry Richert, Jr showed the field the quick way around the 1/4 mile oval. The second Bryant Heating and Cooling Systems Challenge race saw Brad Barickman race to his second win of the night after following Dave Becker for five laps. Barickman would redraw the #4 pill to determine the invert for the feature race.

With the first of 24 scheduled races in the books, several drivers who were not on hand for opening night are preparing to make their 2010 UMSS season debut in the upcoming weeks. Rookie driver Andy Jones got off to a good start in pursuit of the GRP Motorsports/BP Trading Company UMSS rookie bonus award. A further press release will be out soon detailing the increased rookie of the year bonus thanks to bptradingcompany.net in conjunction with GRP Motorsports. Racing action continues with the 9th Annual Billy Anderson Memorial scheduled to be run on Saturday April 24 at the Cedar Lake Speedway. Thanks to the 14 teams who showed up and were ready to race the 2010 UMSS season opener. There are several more teams who should be making their season debut in the next couple of weeks, as the first of 24 scheduled races is now in the books.

Congrats to Dave Becker on his first series win. From a disappointing start and abbreviated 2009 season, Becker kicked off his 2010 campaign in fine fashion by driving the Becker Motorsports #7 sprinter to a well-earned 20 lap feature victory over Jerry Richert, Jr. Richert challenged him on a couple of occasions and generally stayed close throughout a good share of the 20 lap feature race. It is no small feat to keep a great driver like Richert behind you at Kopellah, a track where Jerry earned four feature wins last season.

Many thanks to Brooke Tatnell for helping Ronnie Erickson rebuild his driveline and rear-end following a tough break just prior to the start of the second heat race. Ronnie's night did not go well, but this young driver certainly has plenty of potential just like another young gun, Andy Jones. Andy's night went very well for his first-ever sprint car race. Jones finished 6th in his heat, 5th in his Challenge race, and then advanced from 12th to finish a respectable 7th in his first sprint car feature race.

I also want to thank the two Arlington IMCA cars that came to Kopellah for the opener. Brandon Allen turned in a solid fourth place effort while Jesse Smith ran tenth. I visited with Brandon after the sprint car feature, and he indicated that he had a blast racing on the 1/4 mile Kopellah oval. Certainly was a pleasant change from his usual 1/2 mile tracks. He hoped to be back as many times as he could, as it is not an easy task to travel through the Twin City metro area on a Friday to get to Kopellah. I did not get a chance to chat with Jesse Smith, but I certainly appreciated that he too made the longer tow to come race with the UMSS at Kopellah. As usual thanks to Leigh Thomas, Sye Anderson and Johnny Parsons III for making fairly long hauls to come race with us.

The Hard Luck and Longest Tow Award (if such a thing were to exist), would have gone to Scott Thiel. The young southern Wisconsin driver did some serious damage to his car after something broke and his sharp-looking (prior to the crash) car shot into the turn three concrete wall. Scott was not only concerned about his damaged car, but he was even more concerned about his motor. His throttle stuck momentarily during the crash, but the hard impact even knocked a valve cover off the motor. Scott told me if the motor is junk, they may be done for the season. Hopefully that is not the case at all, as this young hot shoe is very personable and fun to watch as a driver.

Finally, I thought Ron B did a real good job on getting the racing surface in decent condition. Several sprint car drivers I spoke with following the race were happy with the track prep and racing surface. I just wish Kopellah had more and better lighting! Over all, I'm happy with the opening night of the 2010 UMSS season. Now if we could just get a little bit of cooperation from Ma Nature and somehow manage to sneak in another show this weekend! Smile

Brian, send me an email with any info you want to be a part of the bptradingcompany.net additional UMSS Rookie of the Year sponsorship. I'll put together a press release, run it past Ron B, and then get it out to the various media. Nice chatting with you last night and thanks for your support!

Thank you to all for the congrats. We like to say, "A squirrel finds a nut every once in a while..."

I hadn't elaborated on it, but I was going to be happy with a top 5 that night as this car we know little about on the set-up side and it is a change from the Maxims we've run the past 5 years, so the evil Eagle as we used to call it came through on that Friday in Kopellah.

You can likely tell from the video that I was not committed to the top line until the 3rd and final restart when I told myself, "If you want to win this thing, you better get up there and put in some laps!" So, yes, I do talk to myself in the car at least in my mind. At the half way point I concentrated on breathing as I used when lined up for a motocross start when I was young.

By lap 16 it started to give up some power as it heated up so I went to the brake and stayed on the top. For the last 4 laps I took not one breath, so there goes that idea.

Thanks again to all that called, texted, e-mailed, walled, poked. It is tough winning in the modern era with all the communication methods available, but we plan to do it again as soon as possible.

This win was improbable, but it does go to show that as one of my favorite Christian songs notes, "Impossible is not a word, just a reason for someone not to try."

Jim, I hope we get to see you at the nationals this year...

God Bless and hope to see you all at the track again soon.
Becker Motorsports #7 Dave, Cindy & Karlee
