Quote: What, no complaints? No blown tires or fuel stops?
I know I'm stepping on some toes here, and that I might get blasted for saying it, but here goes: Why should it take SEVEN HOURS to run four sprint heats, three mod heats, a sprint dash, mod dash, one sprint B-Main, and two features? I mean, I can respect that they re-worked the track a couple of times, but am I completely out of line in suggesting that they were more interested in padding their beer sales profit margain than in running a prompt program? I mean, after they roto-tillered, watered, and re-packed the track before the features, they roto-tillered it AGAIN. Why?
I can understand a weekly track with tight margains dragging out intermission to increase beer sales when there's only a couple of yellows in the heats, and intermission hits at like 8:30, but I'm pretty confident that with the crowd size and $32 admission, Ray Marler, Kenny Schrader and the World of Outlaws were NOT going to take a loss on this deal if they had pushed things along a little better.
Look, maybe I'm just coming at this from a completley different perspective than most sprint fans since I'm not a beer drinker. I know for a lot of fans, the beer drinking is every bit as important as the racing itslef, but for me, it's a complete non-issue.
And here's something else to consider about time and re-working the track: The Boone, Iowa IMCA SuperNationals can start racing in the late afternoon, run 50-60 races, re-work the track after every 10th race, and still get things done by midnight. Yet I-55 and the WoO took almost 1/3rd of a day yesterday to contest 12 races. (And yes, I understand that sprints have to be pushed off, but with only one red-flag (Shane Stewarts flip in the feature), that excuse seems to ring a little hollow.
Now with all that have being said, we were eventually rewarded with two awesome feature races. I just don't think we should have had to sit in the cold for hours on end to get to that point.
Sorry for writing a novel here, but I just wanted to get this off my chest.

I didn't check the time on my phone when the checkers fell, but I spent MAYBE 15 minutes in the pits after the races, and my car radio said 11:46 when I got to the parking lot. Modified hot laps started about 4:15 in the afternoon.

Marler runs the mods earlier in the day (late afternoon) to move the show along at night so the sprint fans don't have to sit thru all the mortified heats = GREAT idea.
There was a very long intermission before the features but it was to ensure a great surface for the feature - which by all accounts it was.

Some people just cant ever be happy with anything in sprint car racing. It was worth the wait to me. You only get to see the Outlaws a few times a year, its the weekend so take your time and make the features great for all! Great job last night I55~!

So last week, the WoO faced a tire eating track with lots of blown tires. This week, the promoter reworked thetrack to insure a competitive feature for the fans and competitors, Since the winner came from 13th, and the third place finisher from 15th, I'd say that the fans got to see a GREAT show.
My question to those complaining about the length of the show.....Would you rather have seen another repeat of last week? And if you spent 7 hours at the track, well, unless you were in the pits with a car, it was by choice. I'm guessing that you could have seen the entire WoO portion of the program in 4 to 4 and 1/2 hours. Now, that's just not that bad, IMO

So, you're more mortified at the prospect of sitting thru three modified heats than of watching a tractor with a roto-tiller make endless laps around the track? You're entitled to that view, so I guess we'll just agree to disagree.
I do agree that it's a great idea to run the mods in the afternoon, particularly with the typical cool weather this time of year. But you kind of defeat that purpose when you then drag things out for hours on end. I see no compelling reason why that show shouldn't have been done by 9:00 or 9:30.
I have no problem with taking the time to completely re-work a track when conditions truly warrant it. (i.e., a completely locked-down on the bottom track, or a dust bowl so bad no one can see.) But that clearly was NOT the situation last night. Make a lap or two with the water truck at intermission, take a few laps to run it in, and race. If the track slicks off a little bit without being totally locked down, so what? It's winged 410 sprint cars on a dirt track, that happens.

You dont think they should of reworked the track? I do, everyone was up top the whole night prior to the feature. When its the Outlaws do whatever you have to so the feature is great, esp on a weekend night. Maybe Im one of the few but I could wait 5 hours to see the feature if reworking the track would make for a great show. Now a local track doing that, ummm no LOL Plus the time it takes to rework the track is a fun time for me seeing all my friends and racers and chatting. If they did nothing to the track and the feature was junk Im sure people would be complaining about that. We should just all be grateful that we get to see the best sprint car drivers in the world and they risk their lives every second out there on the track for us fans.

Agreed.
Ultimately, here's the deal: I'm pretty much a "meat and potatoes" kind of fan. I want to see racing, and I want to see that racing proceed in a prompt manner. Period. I don't want to drive an hour and pay 30 some odd bucks to hear about how some dude got caught going 70 mph in a 50 mph zone, or how many relief pitchers La Rusa has had to use the night's Redbirds game, or any of the other crap that veteran announcer Mike Muerer had to talk about to fill all the dead time. And like I said, I'm absolutely not a beer drinker, but even if I was, I could do that in a bar after the races. So I couldn't care less if there's time to go get sloshed out in the parking lot before the features. Like the Toby Keith song goes, I'm after a little less talk and a lot more action.

I tried not to reply to this but I finally gave in. IlliNOISE, sounds like maybe you would enjoy your "meat and potatoes" somewhere other than a dirt track they are trying to make the best racing surface possible. Instead of crying about not getting out of there before 11 o'clock, try looking at how good the racing was.......lots of passing and not mimicking a freight train. Take a big breath guy, it is going to be OK.

It truly WAS AN INCREDIBLE RACE.....
Maybe there's not much that can be done about it, but an hour and 15 minute intermission in those temperatures did make it tough on some new race fans I was sitting near.
Some might thats just racing, but in this economy when everyone is choosing their entertainment dollars carefully, just don't know if its the wisest business decision.
But as for this old time, like I said... it was a dang good feature

I'm not taking sides i'm just stating my opinion. I had my 2 little kids with me. Waiting on the track to get reworked a couple of times seems like for ever. On top of that i had to worry about what time am i going to get home. I know i have a 3 hour drive home. Now if it was just me and my better half no worries. But my little ones and i'm nervous. and on top of the track being reworked it got cold. for us adults it was ok but for a 5 and 6 year old it wasn't.
and as far as going to a race just to drink...Isn't there bars for that? I don't mind people drinking at the races but when you stumble and spill beer all over a 5 year old little girl in a damn heat race. You might have a problem. My local track has a place for "drinkers" and a place for "familys". Why don't the big tracks do this?

For one I dont drink at the races, Im always in the pits anyways. I had my 5 year old with me as well. I took plenty of clothes for the both of us. During the times they reworked the track we walked around the pits, talked, took pictures, time flew by for us. I have a 2 hour drive home from Pevely. I say great job on reworking the track and taking the time to do so because that feature was awesome!

It sounds like it was a great show. I wish I had been there rather than sitting at home with a rainout. Some people can always find a bad side to everything.

I also thought it was a great show! What about that guy taking out Ken Shrader on the yellow? That was pretty exciting as well!
