My wife's grandfather was Duke Nalon who had a ton of time in the Novi, that is definantly the "baddest" sounding car on audio I have ever heard.

I grew up in South Central Indiana until my family relocated to San Diego in 1956. I can remember going to the speedway for qualification days -- that was back when the place was packed for qualifications. The Novi always had its own peculiar and great sound.

I can remember the year that Duke Nalon was burned during the race. I believe the race was televised in the Indianapolis area and my mother and I were standing outside a store that carried television with one of them showing the Nalon crash live. I can also remember the radio report the afternoon that Chet Miller was killed in practice at the speedway.

The Novi was a great engine. It's too bad that it never really was a success.

By the way, do you know how they came up with the name Novi? Apparently it was developed in a small town in Michigan that was at a railroad stop Number VI; hence Novi.

That's Parnelli Jones in 1964. Fuel hit the exhaust just as he was leaving the pits at Indy, and he bailed out and did the roll.
