Good racing at the PAS last Saturday.
The track dried out and got dusty. Also was windy.
I saw a fan sitting just below us get hit big time in the head by a rock. Not a stone, but a rock.
He was bleeding pretty good. The track brought the EMT to look at him downstairs. I went down to see him and bring him a bottle of water. He will live. But he did some pretty good bleeding.
I didn't see him again that night. Not sure if he went to the hospital or not.
Some fans behind us were blaming it on the late models and superstocks. They normally do not run with the sprint cars.
As I am siting there I see this track worker walk onto the track to around the middle groove on the front straight and picks up a rock the size of a 1/2 of brick.
Then I realized what I believe to be the problem. When you are switching the track back and forth from off road racing by bring in mounds of dirt and then going back to the oval the next week there probably is going to be some rocks. I love all racing don't get me wrong. Sprints are my favorite and the car counts have been down so Don K had to look for another revenue source. Can't blame him.
I have been watching sprints for 31 years and have done a little crewing back in the 80's in No. Cal. I have been to a lot of tracks on the west coast and AZ.
We have all been hit by a stone or two but this could have killed this dude.
I do not blame Don K or the Perris Speedway team. It just happened.
By the way. Former sprint car ace Mike Kirby is doing just fine running late models. Boy was he fast...
