1991. Somebody goes over hard on this one.
|
That was Scott Claxton that went end over end on the first lap. The heat races were just a matter of survival during this event, it rained right up until the gates opened and the track was a mud pit. Once the features came around it was a fast track. Lot of stuff happened during this race with wrecks, engines grenading, Tony Poe getting thrown out, etc. Thankfully, we survived this one and got to the checkered flag first! Thanks for posting, Brian!

1984 I guess. Champ Dirt Car guys waiting to go out. This vid is just about the way it was if you were a fan going through in those days. I may have needed to edit a few things, but then again I just didn't. Liked it the way it was.

Man, this is like the Twilight Zone! Who won this race? Looked like all the heavy-hitters were there.

Ron Shuman drove the backup Tony Armstrong Ofixco sprinter to victory and followed it up the next night at Knoxville.

Coming soon..............
The video quality should be much better than this on the races. I laid the visual over a soundtrack and that seems to diminish visual quality.
Anyways, from the John Stewart collection comes the 1986 OkC NCRA Winternationals. Word of warning, the files are huge computerwise, so it will take some time to get both nights uploaded.
I just threw this together, in no particular order

I was at that I-70 show. My one and only time to that track. The previous night was an open competition sprint show, the Weld Memorial. Both nights were awesome. The high banks were something to behold. Shuman was amazing. I remember talking to champ car driver Richard Windle, my neighbor, in the pits following the feature. He said it seemed like every time he looked up Shuman was lapping him. Lol.

These are some of the last V6 Modified races to be held. There are a few v8 cars in there, getting ready for the change to v8 supermodifieds the next year.

I know at Lawton the reliabilty was really bad for the v6 cars. 17 cars would show up, and less than ten would finish. I know that for a fact, we had the "next to slowest" car out there! We'd get lapped 3-4 times, but the v6 cars would fall off considerably. Only one time did we ever finish out of the top 10. We were on the way to get a top ten jacket from Lawton, but we had to go to a mule rodeo (LOL), and finished 11th! Yes a d&*n mule rodeo! We had mules too.
In our case we had an old farm truck inline 6 banger, ran slow, but it ALWAYS RAN. It was an old peice of junk, not much to look at ya know.
AND THEN, 22 YEARS LATER I FOUND OUT IT WAS THE OLD KOCO #5 ROY PATTON CAR THAT WON THE 6 CYL PART OF THE 1970 OKC NATIONALS! Now I wish I had that old piece of junk back.

The V-6 mods were awesome.

Cool to be part of that! That was our old KATT car in that first heat race and I think it was the last time I raced on the 1/4 mile. Dad still has one of our Carbone V-6 engines at his shop. The chassis now resides in Ohio with Ron Cubic.

Folks I've been so busy that I haven't been able to keep up with what's what. I have no idea if this is an A feature(prelim) or a B feature. Jump in and help me out here, I get so busy, I find it hard to keep up.
Thank you,

Was that a C feature?
This looks like a Champ Dirt B here, but Tony Armstrong is in it. I DO KNOW the heavy hitters come out later, and this looks like a B to me now, just couldn't imagine a Champ Dirt "C" feature at OkC in 1986!
I'll be down a while as I'm working on getting more memory for the computer, looking to get faster upload times. Thank you
Anyways, here's the next one.
