Hey Scott, will the pits be open to the fans, I would like to bring my camera? Having the pits outside greatly improves the view of the back strach. Ralphie gave me a provisional to the Ralphie section last weekend at Ventura.

Someone should start a poll, pits inside or out. I'd be courious of the results.

Outside, especially if they have spectator pit passes.

The pits outside of turn 1 was GREAT for us fan's but I heard more than one crew say they don't like it back there for the fact that it is WAY harder for them to see what's going on out on the track. As far as seeing the back stretch goes I don't sit all the way at the top but I can see over the haulers when they are there just fine.

Good idea Jeff. From a competitors point it presents some problems that for the most part are annoyances only. No need to get into them. From a fans point I think it was a home run. We were pitted close to the pit entrance and I saw something I had not seen before. A group of cub scouts/boy scouts ? came up before wheel packing and had questions and all wanted pictures with our driver. Very cool deal and tremendous for the PAS. Also, we had a donation made by three great gentlemen that were very appreciative of being in the pits and wanted to help. I don't think that would have happened if we were in the infield. Finally, as a crew member we were able to see the whole track from the infield because no haulers. I think from the stands it has to be awesome. All the fans that stopped by our pits were VERY respectful and courteous thruout the night. It was a pleasure having them there. Lets do it again............................Jim Cardey

I'd have a hard time picking one over the other. Its great having easy access to the pits, and its a big plus for the fans, but its also entertaining watching the pit activity when your pitted in the infield.

That was fun and I appreciated the opportunity to spend some time in the pit area. Maybe the PAS will do it again?

Sorry to say that the pits will be back inside Dave. To many of the teams (not all of them - some understood and saw the value of pitting outside) were unhappy with the situation and voiced their opinion to the staff. Personally, I think they need to take a look at the big picture and understand that it would help the sport immensely in the long run.

Perris was engineered for a inside pit area..works great. If you choose to sit real low in the grandstand or sit behind a light post..don't complain...with the elevated back straight-a-way 90% of the seats have a perfect view for the spectators....what you guys really want is a free pass into the pits...fine,,why not lobby perris to have an open pit hour ..between 3-4 they issue a free 1 hour pit pass..at 10 till 4 they blow a horn ,and spectators leave the pits.Anyone under 14 would have to be escorted ,so maybe they could offer 'tours' of the pits to groups also.....by the way-$20 for general admission ,$45 for a pit pass..so it cost $25 more to experience the 'pits'..I think every fan should try it one time-it 'll give you a new outlook on racing

Dan, they got into the pits free at the Sokola Shootout. That is what they are asking to see if we are doing it again. It was just like NHRA - every ticket was a pit pass - and the fans loved it.

Food for thought -

It's a collossal PITA to pit outside the track. With all due respect Mr Cardey, you aren't the one making car setup decisions based upon the current track conditions. If the track conditions change and I don't have time to get up to the track to look at it, there's a possibility I could make an incorrect decision that may up hurting yours or somebody else's kid. It's a big burden to carry. Over time I forgotten the decisions I've made that led to race wins but I've never forgetten any of the times I made a bad decision where the poor slob behind the wheel ended up dumping the thing.

Having said that, I also recognize the benefit to the fans and how we need to keep them involved and get the younger ones interested. Perhaps consider some form of quid pro quo. Make the "All tickets are a pit pass" event a special event that only happens say.... every 4/6/8/? races. Maybe think about doing a reduced pit pass price on those days. You might as well do that anyway because no one is going to buy pit passes if it's cheaper to just come through the front gate. Free beer after the races. (never hurts to ask, ya know) If you give some sort of inducement back to the teams they will be more likely to embrace it.

personally I don't like the pits outside it seems to slow the show down a bit,but I can see where the fans would love it and the access to the teams is cool

I like the idea of opening the pits before the show and run us out at say 3:30 or 4:00

ROB

PS like Dan said everyone should spend one night in the pits its a whole different game

I agree with Rich Cee. Being out in the north 40 was tough on us crews as we could not watch the racetrack as the night went on. It bit us as we crashed real hard in the Semi of midgets cause we set our car up to the track the sprint cars had in the heats. Not blaming the track cause Ray and Donnie did an excellent job with what they had. If we were in the infield we would have seen the track coming back and could have adjusted. Now I have a driver and car that will miss the first race cause of injury, But that is racing. We will race again. Thanks Perris for including the midgets and we will be back...
