FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

USAC WEST COAST 360 SPRINTS INVADE TULARE MARCH 6TH
By Lance Jennings

Tulare, CA – February 26, 2010…The USAC West Coast 360 Sprint Car Series will kickoff the 2010 season at the Groppetti Automotive Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway on Saturday, March 6th. The event will mark a new chapter in the club’s history with sanctioning by the United States Auto Club (USAC). It is also the group’s first appearance at Steve Faria’s lightning fast 1/3rd mile facility.

“It is going to be awesome to have USAC's resources available to us. Our racers deserve the National recognition they are now going to receive,” says Series Promoter Chris Kearns. “I feel we are really taking a step in the right direction for 360 Non-Wing Sprint Car Racing. We are getting tremendous support from the racers, and already have great support from SouthWest Contractors and Hoosier Tires.”

Hanford’s Justyne Hamblin, the 2009 Series Champion, will look to defend her title and score a win over a talented roster of drivers that are expected at Tulare. Hamblin’s championship run of consistency in the JH Motorsports / Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino #8 SpeedTech included 12 top-5 finishes and a victory at Hanford. That win also helped her secure the Kings Speedway title.

Rusty Carlile of Bakersfield, Clovis’ Peter Murphy, Tipton’s Danny Faria Jr., and Kerman’s Davey Pombo are just a few of the drivers that will challenge for the top spot. Also in the mix are 2007 Bandit Champion Jesse Mack and 2002 VRA Champion Jimmy Crawford.

Carlile, who finished second in the series point chase, is poised to make a run at the crown. Piloting the Southwest Contractors / NTS Incorporated #51 Bullet, Rusty battled up to the very last lap of the season to make his title claim. Carlile’s 3 fast times (tied for most on circuit), 9 top-5 finishes, and a victory at Hanford put him in the championship hunt.

Considered by many as the major contender for the 2010 title is Peter Murphy. Despite missing some key point races in the Tarlton & Son Inc. / Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino #21 Maxim, Murphy finished third in the series standings. Peter scored six wins (most on the circuit), 13 top-5 finishes, and claimed the Santa Maria track title.

The Non-Winged USAC West Coast 360 Sprints will return to the Tulare clay oval on April 3rd, April 10th, May 15th, October 1st, and October 2nd. The October races are part of the “Tulare Fall Spectacular,” featuring the popular Trophy Cup format with Dave Pusateri’s blessing.

The Saturday, March 6th showcase is part of a doubleheader program featuring the World of Outlaw Sprint Cars. The West Coast Late Models will share the card on Friday night, March 5th. Tickets for Friday are $35 bleachers and $40 grandstands. Saturday tickets are $40 bleachers and $45 grandstands. Advance tickets are on sale and can be purchased by calling the track office at (559) 688-0909. For more event information, visit the track’s website at www.tularethunderbowl.com.

The Groppetti Automotive Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway is located on the Tulare County Fairgrounds at the corner of Bardsley and K Streets in Tulare, California.

I think it is going to be an awesome show and we are looking forward to it. In fact, I predict the list of fast, fast teams there is too long for Lances race preview. From the little I was able to witness from Hanford's practice there are going to be some serious and committed contenders to the title.

As one of those contenders related to me, racing in front of the crowd at the Thunderbowl will be like nothing many of these racers have experienced. It will be awesome.

Without over stating or hyperbole this is like NASCAR starting off with the Daytona 500 (520 this year) in a respect. I hope this events success translates to a great season. Steve and Don with the Thunderbowl have done a great job with this event as well as Chris Kearns in working this deal. That momentum I hope carry over to Hanford and their new deal there. Scott and the team deserve a good start and things carry on from there.

It will be great for some of the younger competitors display their abilities to the great open wheel fans and top flight teams of this sport that will be there.

I am counting the days and so is the team I am working with and for. It is going to be a blast!

"I predict the list of fast, fast teams there is too long for Lances race preview." This statement seems like a BIG stretch. I appreciate what Kearns is doing Pete but I think your stretching the rubber band a bit to much here. These are teams with good competitive intentions. Hell, even the CRA 410's are struggling to have a lengthy list of "fast-fast" teams now days. Would you be so kind to post your list of these "fast-fast" teams so we can see who you consider as such? Remember, it needs to be a long list. wink

Regardless of the length of ones "List"......I'm sure the fans are in store for a great 2010 season. There is a genuine excitement in the racing community with management changes at tracks, more money for racers and an inventory of cars that gets to stick together.....

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE on opening night and through 2010.

Thanks for the thought provoking response tasser.

What your post implies is that this group is short on talent bar a couple of teams. I beg to differ with you. First we can get some terms straight…long is a subjective term but to me it is more than a few. Not a specific quantity but most definitely more than a short list. Second, I am basing my point on history. Third, my points are based on performance.

These are the reasons you or any other fan would enjoy watching this group, even over the CRA brand where the economy and other considerations are taking its toll. There are reasons why the 360 brand is worthy of patronage.

Davey Pombo is a force to be reckoned with, he has the team and resources to be fast. A multiple time champ has everything in place to dominate. What is more powerful is his mental toughness and determination. He has the fire in the belly. I agree, not a long list so far.

Justyne Hamlin is a sprint car Champion and local favorite who is proven fast. If you saw her win on the high side at Santa Maria a few years ago she is on the list of contenders.

Rusty Carlile- a perennial contender for the title and very, very fast every time he hits the track. There is one two car team that is fast, fast…the VanderWeerd brothers. Neither one cancels each other. Jace and Richard are realistic contenders for any win, any time, any where. Jonathon Logan is another Champ with speed. He has what it takes to be a factor doesn't he?

There are some other youngsters that have a few seasons on them that I count here, Wes Gutierrez from Gilroy way. He has had some strong wins too. Wes's buddy T.J. Smith is fast if nothing else. He can stand on the throttle and be a contender. Jonathon Henry shows up big, especially in big races. He has some All Coast victories to his credit. A fast guy.

Down home "Hollywood" Danny Faria is one of the fastest of the fast. One of the most determined and exciting racers in our neck of the woods, Dan has been his best when there is a big race. Remember those Grand Slam races?

Steven Williams is a guy that loves Tulare and is on my surprise you fast list. Ricky Kirkbride is another kid with a couple of years under his belt that has proven to be fast too. Tyler Schmidt was very close to wins a couple of seasons ago and fast.

'Junkyard" Jimmy Thompson has track records and Championship titles to fall back on and is fast. Greg Porte is another fast Champion. He doesn't run for second place.

There is a guy with fast in his name. "Fast Albert" Pombo is a dude that can win from anywhere. He has the seasoning and ability to show that fast driving style off.

Ok, I have left some off the list so far. I left off the normal winged guys that on occasion run wingless. Brent Kaeding did last year, arguable not a slug and very fast. Danny Sheridan races a lot of 360 events and is a multiple time wingless champ and very fast.

I also did not mention the winningest team of the decade with the wingless 360 lot. That is because although a significant player with these 360's, he is but a part of the group. Albeit a very fast, well liked and respected member of that family.

The other parts are that I have more likely than not left fast, fast teams off my list and apologize for that. We'll have to see just who we add to that list. We also don't know who will be making the trip from SoCal or NorCal to race the 360's and or do double duty. This race is NOT going to be short on talent.

With the magnitude of the venue and the program, it is reasonable to assume there will be some fast, fast teams ready, willing and able to fight it out for the inaugural win of the season. That is how I see it.

Take Care and hopefully se ya there...
