sweet --back when the world of outlaws where outlaws, and the cars where sprint cars not super-modified's, thy ran what thy wanted to run, before the air foil crutches and tire rules and blah Blah Blah, back when building a sprint car was an art a craft not a shopping trip, a time before train racing back when runaway wins where few and far between.man i miss the days when being an outlaw was something special . thankfully we still have GSC and USAC and our local tracks and stars for great side by side racing.

You're dead right it was Tim Green.

Great video, thanks. How about the photographers standing just off the track in the corners? Also I think I recognized a couple of old rescue guys, back when their 'fire suits' were matching short sleeve shirts. The flagstand was fairly new at this time. It did hang out over the track till a bad wreck tore it down. Looked like Jack Miller on the mic.

i was going to give u a speech but I'm just going to say this, we can and have advanced a long way in safety (unfortunatly we Will always need more in this sport it will never be 100 percent safe) but the advancement's of good old racing sucks and we need rules for safety but the rest of the rule book is for pussy's back in the good old days men where men and went racing knowing the chances and pussy's went golfing ------------- and by the way i am one of those that has lost a loved one to the sport that we love (myself and the rest of my family) so very much and we all knew the chances back in the "good old days"-----P's- i also love bull fighting have u ever been to one ? no i suppose not i'm sure u where to busy golfing

I know we have come a long way in safety but man, you are right about the racing being better back then. I just wish I existed around this time to see it. Now you have to go to a short high-bank track to see a show even 1/2 as good as that.

First off that video was great and I love the historical footage, thank you. Now for the comments in this thread, you guys are hilarious. You act like there are no good races anymore which is complete bullshit.

Half those races from the past that you guys wax poetically about were runaway shows. I have seen them from many, many decades now and the shows are no worse than before. How can you watch the current crop of racers in both winged and non winged events from today and say they are boring? The poster that stated your looking through rose coloured glasses got it right.

The difference between Steve Kinsers equipment back in the day and his fellow competition was pretty damn huge. The difference today is not so much and the racing has benefited by it. I still think as far as half miles go, you don't expect much good racing now days but then again I didn't expect much in the past either.

Cheers!

1 example of what i am talking about is Calistoga speedway in northern California Ive attended sprint car racing at Calistoga for 50 years and i had very mixed emotions about them going to wings it killed the RACING but on the other hand it made the RACING safer way safer so i excepted the wings at stoga now fast forward 20 some years and the advancements made in safety has come far enough that it is once again safe enough to run wingless at stoga which thy have done the last 2 years with USAC and all i can say is awesome simply awesome (just like the good old days)and no one that has witnessed what i am talking about can Deny this. now the racing on the short tracks in this area is second to none, it is just as good as it was in the good old days and thats my point, how much have the cars advanced in the last 15 -20 years we used to try new things every year now the big change from year to year is what tires are we going to be forced to run this year---we had 1 big block for the bigger tracks and 2 high rpm small blocks for the short tracks and we where having FUN and then the local sanctioning body's and the local tracks started using the WoO rules (410s and so on) and that put us and several other teams in our area out of racing we used to get 40 to 60 or more cars for a local show and there were several tracks running sprint cars on the same night within 4 hrs of each other and 2/3rds of the Field was there just to have fun now u are lucky to see a B main thy are having to run 360s with 410s to get a full Field and still not getting 22 cars.and i'm not sure if anybody is having fun anymore but if u think that is better well each to there own opinions right----and who sead anything about boring ?

I believe the first driver may have been Ralph Blackett. Jack Miller is speaking to Governor Robert Ray...my dad worked security for him...

Gov Robert Ray attended a lot of races in the '70's, is he still around?

There was also an Iowa politician named "Dick Clark" in that era that was an avid race fan.
