State Fair Speedway closing after 55 years
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — State Fair Speedway likely will be closing after 55 years, but the reasons why remain in dispute.
Mayor Mick Cornett says the track at the state fairgrounds would require about $400,000 in immediate electrical repairs before racing could be safely conducted this year.
He says it would take more money for the track to meet requirements of the federal American Disabilities Act and that noise issues for neighborhoods surrounding the track are a concern.
Track promoter Lanny Edwards calls those issues a "smoke screen" and says city officials and the State Fair board have been trying to get rid of the track for awhile so they can replace it with a more profitable facility.
Cornett says that the city would work with a developer interested in establishing a track at another site in Oklahoma City.
