On the Speed report tonight: Scott Bloomquist was suspended from WoO LM racing until May or June and fined $23,000 for soaking his tires prior to the world finals. I'm not much of a gearhead, but have heard of a spray compound that was banned but not this soaking deal. Soaking in what? I imagine this is a rule in all dirt track series, or not?? Bloomquist is one of those guys who says things promoters and series "rulers" don't like so maybe they've been after the guy. Anyway, with all the serious competition in dirt LM racing, don't think Blomquist will have a problem filling his schedule. Also, he'll probably not pay the fine and race in Lucas and UMP and other places.

Soaking the tires is the application of a non-approved substance to alter the adhesion properties of the tire. The chemical nature of the tire is manipulated into a more adhesive state, allowing for greater traction on a slick surface.

Also known as---cheating

maybe the analysis was INCONCLUSIVE again...but this time, someone grew a set and made a ruling in favor of the racers who did not push the envelope?

Yep! There are many different kinds of preps. Goat Pee is one that is particularly potent; used it once and the wife said no more! There are much more tame preps that are undetectable to the sniffers also. To find out more info on preps, go to www.4cycle.com Click on karting forums, click on handling, click on tires/preps. If you want info on prepping specific to late models and sprints, find Eric Rendleman on there; he is THE guy to talk to on that. I am a kart racer, so I can be of some help too.

Bloomquist got caught last year too, and he admitted it . He said everyone else is doing it, so he decided too. He was three tenths of a second faster in time trials at Lowes. He is claiming now they were just washing the tires with a citrus soap. Soaking , tire prep, whatever you want to call it is all over. If you are racing somewhere with a tire rule, I am sure their are guys are trying something to get their tires softer.

Just goes to show the more rules you have, the more ways to cheat. Let them treat tires, who cares obviously it didn't help bloomer. He was junk in the features at lowes. Limit intake sizes and put on smaller tires and let them race.

He will not be able to run any series/track WRG/WoO owns/sanctions which also includes UMP.

I guess we'll see if WRG has the brass to stick to there guns or if they'll cave in like some of the other series in fear of some lost ticket sales.

If people don't think it's not going on in the sprint car world you're only kidding yourself.

Here is the thing. The WoO late models don't have a tire compound rule. You can run any tires at any time during the race program.

I agree with you D1RT. With how important qualifying is for sprint car guys. I am sure many have tried something..

This practice is a direct result of "hard" tires and tire rules; some guys will try anything to get around the rule.

Everyone knows that a softer tire will grip better in the short run; so sanctioning bodies/promoters, when they have a tire hardness rule, will likely find someone using tire softeners, even when it is prohibited.

They only way to prevent it is to BAN the rule breaker...and then stick to it! Otherwise, cheating in this area will continue......

BTW - from what I've heard some don't "soak" the tires but paint the compound on the inside and let it work from inside out to try to avoid detection. Suspicion is then usually only aroused when a cut tire smells funny.

I'll guarantee a lot of regular guys soak their tires. Not necessarily to "cheat" but for a way to save some money. It's one way to use up some old tires that have sealed up or just don't seem to work for one reason or another. Softener is a lot cheaper than a new tire.

I try to explain that the old adage of " It's only cheating if you get caught"..is bullshit !

I tell our teams that it is stealing from your fellow competitors and you will be branded as being a thief.

With that in mind... Now who likes the idea of being a thief ?
