most of the big-bell and compact in and out box parts are modified pre 1948 ford 3- speed parts.I've used a stock ford input shaft and slider in a CAE box before.Be aware that somewhere along the line a change was made at the back of the input shaft, older in and outs had the stock long open roller bearing, newer ones used a more modern ball bearing. It's surprising how many of the drive-line parts are copys of old stock parts-you go buy a brand new winters rear end and it still has a reproduction 1939 to 1952 ford 3/4 ton ring and pinion!

Oldtom from Fargo, You are right on about the interchange of parts. I had a full transmission in my first car, large CAE in the next 2 then the small CAE in all after that. The input shaft has to be machined off and resplined to fit the the hub that replaces the clutch/flywheel that goes with the large CAE box.

If I remember correctly, the small CAE only has the top shaft from front and rear and direct drive (high gear only). I think there were some thin spacer rings too that take any slop ot of the direct drive. It all turns together when in gear.

The rear shaft would fit to the car u joint (assembeled with bushings) and also fir the larger 3/4 ton Ford truck u joint assembeled with needle bearings. The truck u joint lasted for years if you packed new grease before season started. And I would expect the new aluminum speed shop u joints of today to fit the same shaft.

Pappy Weld (Jerry, Greg & Kenny's father offerred to cut my drive shaft tube off at the front of the slip joint and weld a small larger diameter extension between it and the u joint bell housing to place a sealed carrier bearing to carry the back of the 3/4 u joint. The rear of the u joint also had to machined to fit in the carrier bearing. You can buy all of that at the speed shops now.

Oldtom, you are the one that drove Dennis Fike's sprint at Grand Forks. It is the car Dave Hoska has restored and I originally built it for Stan Borofsky for the 72 season. Right ???..Luther

I got to drive the car a couple of times in grand forks-I'm pretty sure it was before Fike owned it but after Doug Hjermstad was killed. There were couple of owners between. The car was still a spring front when I drove it.My car must have been broken for me to have driven someone elses car. Tom

Oldtom,... I bought a champ dirt car from a fellow that lived a few miles north of Grand Forks then east across the line into Mn It was July 4 th week end in 1967. He was Don Mack's car owner & they had tried to get this 100 in dirt car to work locally. It also had a dolly trailer like the trailers Watson used but the car did not appear to be a Watson. ..I-29 was still under construction so was a time consuming trip I did a turn around trip arriving there about 8 am on Saturday & leaving to return a couple of hours later.. I used the parts to build a new car which is the 7 th car I built on the link here. I sold the frame, body and tail tank but the 18 in wheels are in eastern Kansas somewhere and worth a lot more than I paid for the car...Luther

Oldtom, The name, Max Campbell sounds familiar. If you do have any pictures of the champ dirt car or the car you drove, I would appreciate a copy email to : [email protected]

I first met Don Mack and Doug Howell at opening day at Topeka Fairgrounds in 1964. I got to know Doug better over the years because he traveled more. I think Doug was driving in 64....Luther
