Part of my early sprint car apprenticeship involved scraping mud on the J Elias Ready Mix car that Rip drove early in his career. I do seem to recall scraping mud off the wooden wheel spokes.

The good old days, no yellow or red flags,
muti-grooved track, whips, efficient stretcher bearers, cool lap
counter.
They really knew how to keep the show
moving.
Too bad the low buck guy's can't afford those
custom cutter wheels.
