We just returned from Little Rock and cannot resist commenting on the Short Track Nationals since there have been so many negative remarks made at rheir expense. After determining on our way home that we have now attended 9 STN's ,we did our usual post mortem on the past 3 days of winged sprint car racing and found that in our judgement this one had to rank right up there at the top of the events that included wins by Jason Sides,Paul McMahon,Gary Wright,Tim Montgomery,Jason Johnson,Jason Meyers and Tony Bruce.jr.
Everybody knows that every pearl is not perfectly formed and there is no such thing as a perfect racetrack or race car driver. At the age of 75 I am grateful that we still have the opportunity to enjoy the entire experience of this sport that we all love.
Once again we were afforded the pleasure of watching some good races and the weather this year was better than average.Good friends and a lot of laughs helped us celebrate our 59th Anniversary in Arkansas where the story all began.
Next year we are shooting for our 60th anniversary and our 10th Short Track National.I don't expect it to be perfect but can only hope that it is just as much fun as this year.
See you there ?

I'm glad you guys had fun down there!! Wish I could've gotten to join you, but the postponement didn't quite work in my schedule! Luckily, the races in Perris weren't too darn shabby, either...
Hopefully I get to see you two soon...maybe Kemper or Chili Bowl?

Thanks for the comments:
Even though the non-wing cars have "won"us over, the winged version is not too bad when observed on a short track. The ASCS guys are very impressive and we love the format of NO TIME TRIALS !
You don't even have to have a favorite to enjoy these races but because this year's event included the Swindell brothers,we especially enjoyed watching Sammy go to work and the results were just as rewarding as ever.
When Sammy exited the track surface heading for the pits it was not apparent that he would be able to get that tire replaced and return in time for the restart. The BOOS that rained down upon him had to have once again lit a fire in his belly and as long time fans we were gratified that those short sighted ones did not anticipate what an incentive they had provided. At the drop of the green,I had really felt that Sam would stink up the show because his car seemed completely overwhelming in the earlier dash, but that was quickly dispensed with when his competitors swarmed and attacked with their usual intensity. But having to start at the rear on a track that no-one else seemed to be able to pass on was going to be a challenge.
Like all die hards,I believe that "IF HE HAD JUST GOTTEN ONE MORE YELLOW..............! So in one respect, his 5th place finish was anticlimactic.
But Sammy did us proud and made us want to be there next year when he comes back and repeats his win back in 1990.
(However, I think those other "fellers" are going to have the same idea ! )
P.S.
Andrew,we missed you.And maybe next year you will save your airfare and pass up the Oval Nationals, although seeing Damien and company HAD to have been worth it.

Bud and Keet it was good seeing you again for a few minutes Sat. night! It was definitely better this year than last time. If I can keep making the trip down, I'll keep coming back for this race. See you and your boys at the Bowl!

Glad to see you had a good time, and congrats on the 59 year anniversary .
I should see you folks at Kemper Arena next month.
P.S. A good win for Damion, but Fridays race was even better! (lots of good racing in the A)

Petey : We will definitely see you in January at Tulsa. If not before, I imagine that we will be checking out the Bean Bag Tourney.I'm glad that you didn't let the negative posts deter you from coming down.I guess that watching the qualifying nights was a lot like the story about the 4 blindmen examining the elephant and describing it from the vantage point of the ears, trunk, feet and tail that they each "saw".EVERYBODY HAS A DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW !
From what we saw it was all good.
Andrew: Hope that we see you next year in Little Rock but if not maybe an Indiana race or the Chili Bowl.
We are going to keep Little Rock on our Dance Card as long as we can still haul ourselves up into the grandstand and the weather isn't too mean.Alfa Carol keeps us entertained and educated as to who is doing what.So it's a win/win all the way.
We have our fingers crossed that Kemper will not be as cold this year. Those "in the know" moved up to the second level and even took their coats off !
HAPPY THANKSGIVING ! later,Keet

Stubb you may not want me as a partner haven't played for a while (prolly since last time at the Bowl haha), prolly a little rusty. The racing was a lot better this year. I think they may have over watered the track for Sat. Gary Wright only passed one car in his heat after starting last. Pretty much ruined his chances of making the featch. Weather was great! Got up to nearly 80 during the day and low 50's to high 40's during the night I think. Give my best to Gail and see you all in Tulsa!

Well, well .... we're all on the same thread at the same time.
1. Keet ... 75 years of age and a 60th wedding anniversary coming up? I had no idea you guys were married that young. Or maybe Bud is perhaps a few years older huh??
2. Not long to go now Stubb. The weather is warming up already ... Adelaide has been over the century and Melbourne (home of Tiger Woods) has a heatwave at the mo. But you're not going to either of those places, so it doesn't matter. Sydney is sensational right now with cloudless skies and 27 degrees (make that 84 in your money). The beer is being chilled and the steaks are marinating ....
3. Andrew .... What number race was Perris for the season? I watched Friday night's feature on USAC Live and I agree, it was a ripper. (Was he in it?)

I havent kept count this year. I didnt think with my work schedule that I was going to go to as many races as last year when I finally hit the 100 mark. I am guessing that It was in the 90's,and I still have a couple more to go at Kemper arena next month.
Ripper was in it,and his 2 sons were racing there this weekend too. Friday nights race was one of the best of the year. All 3 nights of the Ovals were good racing
Dick Monahan and I also went to the NHRA museum in Pomona which was good considering that I dont go to drag races, and while there got some literature for the Justice Brothers museum which was just 12 miles away in Duarte. That was even better. All sorts of Kurtis midgets including a roadster midget,a couple Silver Crown cars (one was driven by our friend Lee Kunzman) some sprint cars and also some 1936 Fords too. I forgot my camera back at the motel,so I'll have to go back again some day just to take some photos!
