I'm working on a story about sprint car paint schemes, and I'm looking to talk to someone who does this professionally about what goes into the design, what the current trends are, etc. If anyone out there does this or has a good contact for me, I'd love it if they could email me at [email protected].
Also, I'm trying to lump these into different categories of schemes. One of the most popular is something like this, which I guess I would consider "tribal" (like tribal tattoos). I think it's closely related to this, which my wife calls the "Nike Swoosh" design. Then there are the always popular "flames" design. Are there any other types of popular designs that I'm missing?

Just got an email saying I should respond to this thread, I'm more of a t shirt artist than a paint scheme designer, if there's a story needed on t shirt art however I've got almost 30 years of dirt in the business.

Yak is a great one, but I'd also contact the guys at Firedown. Some badass schemes come from those guys.

The fine art of hand lettered race cars are kind of a thing of the past. Theres nothing like the a hand lettered car with pinstripes and such. However graphics tend to last alot longer and there are more options as far as wild ass designs being that they are computer generated. Here is just one of Fire Down graphics designs, one of my favorite.

The older I get, the faster I used to be.
