Wes Gutierrez Turns Heads in First Ever Non-Wing 410 Sprint Car Run

By Gary Costa

Perris, CA - (September 19, 2009) – There's a new kid on the block, and his name is Wes Gutierrez. The 18-year-old teen sensation turned heads as the kid from San Martin, CA drove the wheels off of the WG Motorspots No. 007 Maxim during the 13th Annual Jack Kindoll Classic in USAC/CRA Non-Wing action.

It was not only the fact that last Saturday was the first time that Gutierrez has even seen the Perris Auto Speedway, but it was also his maiden voyage behind the wheel of a jaw dropping 410 power plant. Gutierrez was itching to get clearance to race from his doctor, following a nasty series of flips at Kings Speedway in Hanford, CA on 8/29. The young masher was scheduled to race with the USAC/CRA at Calistoga and with the World of Outlaws at Chico, but that was to be for naught, however, and that made the youngster yearn even more to get behind his beloved WG Motorsports mount.

"It feels so good to be back in the car. I missed racing so bad," Gutierrez said. "I want to thank Jimmy Oskie. He was there helping me the whole night. I really can't thank him enough. It was really special having someone such as him helping me; I think the world of him."

Gutierrez would get on the gas, and would qualify a respectable 11th quick out of the 38 cars that took time. In his 10 lap heat race, brake problems would begin to plague Gutierrez. He chased Blake Miller across the line, missing the transfer position for the feature. Gutierrez and the team were forced to make a decision to either load it up, or stay and race – of course the young lion chose to race the semi - and race he did. Veteran Cory Kruseman and Gutierrez battled tooth-and-nail during the 12 lap semi, with "The Kruser" taking the top spot with Gutierrez in tow.

"We had absolutely no brakes. I'm not kidding either. We had the choice to load it up and go home, or race," he said. "There's no way I was leaving; I was going to race! Perris is a great facility, and I was having a blast….the only place I was going, was to go strap in."

Gutierrez would line up with fierce competitor Rip Williams in the fifth row. When the green flag came out, Gutierrez was immediately on the charge. And with no brakes, "WG" was still going all-out, not missing a beat. He would follow Williams and watch the line he was running. The quick study was doing what he could as he would have to "power slide" the car at times to compensate for the lack of the brakes, which would hurt him at times during the 30 lap feature. In the waning laps, Gutierrez would settle into his seventh position, and bring home a solid finish against some of the toughest non-wing pilots in the country.

"I'm really proud of what we did. I've never even seen Perris before. I really need to thank my all of my sponsors, family, and Rod (team manager). Without them, I wouldn't have been able to do this," an appreciative Gutierrez explained. "This is my life – this is all I want to do. I'm a ways off from guys like Rip, Cory, Mike Spencer, and the rest of them, but I'm going to give 110% when I race them, so that I can gain their respect. I would also like to thank everybody that helped us, and the fans. The fans at Perris are fantastic, and I can't wait to come back again."

Catch Wes Gutierrez this Friday at Ocean Speedway. Wes will be competing with the GLR Investments 360 Series vs. the Civil War Sprint Car Series.

As always, excellent write up, Gary! As I mentioned in an earlier post, this kid is the real deal.

Hopefully his website will be updated soon with a revised schedule that includes the Oval Nationals and the National race at Tulare! Wes mentioned to me Saturday night that he plans to attend the October show at PAS to tune up for these big shows. Can't wait to see what he can do with some brakes!
