Richert is UMSS Legendary 100 Winner, Leigh Thomas is 2009 Point Champion

New Richmond, WI

By: Greg Parent (9-19-09)

The final event of the inaugural UMSS season was held during the Legendary 100 at the Cedar Lake Speedway on Saturday, September 19. Although the field of cars was small, the season point championship would be decided on this night between Leigh Thomas and Jerry Richert Jr. Richert ended up winning the Legendary 100 feature race, but Leigh Thomas emerged as the 2009 UMSS point champion. Richert recorded his seventh UMSS win of the season when he passed race leader Sye Anderson on the fifth lap in a nonstop fifteen lap season finale. Leigh Thomas only needed to start the main event, and when he pushed off on to the track his title hopes were realized.

Rookie driver Cody Hahn and Mighty Axe champion Sye Anderson brought the field to the green for 15 laps of very fast-paced, nonstop winged 360 sprint car racing around the high-banked 3/8 mile oval. Anderson grabbed the early lead, as the field strung out a bit. Richert wasted little time in his march to the front. In just one lap, Richert moved forward from his sixth starting spot to the third position, then passed Hahn on lap three to run second. Two laps later, Richert shot by Anderson in turn two and never looked back. Hahn was able to slip past Anderson on lap nine while fourth starter Leigh Thomas moved up a spot to third the next lap. Fifth starter Brad Barickman was able to get by Anderson on the last lap to finish fourth. The final finishing order saw Richert earn the Legendary 100 title followed by Cody Hahn with his personal best feature race finish, UMSS champion Leigh Thomas, Brad Barickman, Sye Anderson, Joseph Kouba, Johnny Parsons III, and Kevin Nickel. The top three finishers received trophies and stood in victory lane together. Leigh Thomas won the eight lap heat race.

The UMSS wishes to thank all of the drivers, owners, sponsors, track owners, and series officials for their support during the first season for the upstart organization. The UMSS was able to lay the groundwork to build upon in coming years during a successful 2009 campaign that saw the group race at three different tracks in fifteen nights of racing. Plans are underway for the 2010 season, as the group moves forward to help build 360 sprint car racing in and around the Twin City metro area. Several meetings during the off-season will be scheduled to gain input on how to fine-tune the racing program and help bring 360 sprint car racing to new fans. Congratulations to Leigh Thomas on winning the 2009 UMSS point championship!

I posted this same message on another thread, so excuse me for being repetitive, but I just have to ask the question: How can Jerry Richert Jr. not win the UMSS championship. I have a lot of respect for Leigh Thomas, but look at the comparison between the two for the year: They each attended all 16 races Richert finished better than Thomas in 12 of the 16 races. Richert's average finish was 3.8, Thomas' average finish was 6.5. Richert finished in the top five in 12 of the 16 races, Thomas finished in the top five in only three of the races. Richert won seven of the 16 races and Thomas won zero. Richert basically dominated the series, but he finishes in the runnerup spot? Either someone added up the points wrong or their is a serious flaw in the point system.

Jerry didn't start the feature (or the heat or challenge races) at CLs the night of the JR Memorial. He didn't receive any points that night (as far as I understand the system). On that night Leigh earned 234 points as compared to 0 Jerry earned.

UNOFFICIALLY: I total Leigh's points at 3786 and Jerry's at 3762. Over the 16 races Leigh averaged 236.635 points. that's 0.635 over a 7th place average as compared to the UMSS point chart. Jerry averaged 235.125 which is 1.125 points over an 8th place finish. For actual finishes Leigh had: 7, 7, 8, 11, 4, 2, 6, 8, 6, 7, 6, 7, 7, 9, 8, 3 (nice, strong run on the last night). Jerry had: 4, 9, 1, 1, 1, 1, 13, 2, 1, 2, 2, 1, 3, 10, DNS, 1. On a straight, simple average Leigh has a 6.625 finish. Very similar to the average computed by points comparison. Jerry's is hard to compute because you have to substitute a number for his DNS. Averaging over just 15 races he has 3.466. The total can't just be dived by 16 as a 0 for the DNS makes it look better. so you have to substitute a number. If you use 21, it is 4.5625. If you use 50, it is 6.375. Working backwards from how the point system , Jerry's DNS was equal to a 69th place finish.

The nut is that this point system punishes a non-start and a no-show equally. Right or Wrong? Doesn't matter, it just was this way for 2009. As far as I know Jerry and team are OK with the results, disappointed by the DNS more than the 2nd place in points. Should it be differnent next year? Well that's for the UMSS to decide this off-season (with continued constructive input such as the other thread and this one).

Congrats to Leigh and team on their championship.
Congrats to Jerry and team for all their wins.

Yes a huge congrats goes to Leigh and his team, and also congrats to Jerry and his team for an excellent season.

I don't think a first year for a series could have been better, obviously more cars would have helped but that will come next year I think.

Thanks to Ron, Chuck, Joe, Mark, Bryan, GRP, the safety guy (sorry I never got his name) and many others for working so hard and giving me such a great series to run my first year.

Thanks to all the drivers and teams who helped me out this year and thanks to alot of them for putting up with me Smile

Thanks to Davey Whitworth who was only a phone call away everytime I had a question.

and most of all THANKS TO ALL OF THE FANS WHO CAME OUT AND SUPPORTED THE UMSS. I hope to see you all again next year. Add me as a friend on Facebook to keep in touch about news in the off-season and our plans for next year!

Richert earned show points at the Memorial not sure how many that is. The way the points system is step up it be very hard to not start an a main and win the points championship. Consistency wins championships congrats to leigh on your championship!

I think it was a very impressive first season for the UMSS. I look forward to see what next year brings for this series. Thank to all the guys that worked so hard on starting this series!

Congrats to Cody Hahn on your 2nd place run at cedar and your impressive rookie season. Cant wait to see what you can accomplish next year.

And Congrats to Sonny and the crew on the win! 7 wins equals one very fun season!

I agree 100%. I think the UMSS did a good job in it's 1st year. I hope things get bigger and better. It's a harsh point system when one bad break costs a driver any chance of the points title no matter how much you dominated the series. Hopefully the UMSS can tweak the point system a little, or maybe even run a Outlaws point system. Either way I can't wait for next year and hopefully be able to watch alot of great racing close to home again!!!

Congrats to Leigh Thomas on his UMSS points title. Also congrats to Jerry Richert Jr on a awesome season, and my vote for UMSS driver of the year!

I think we really did have a very harsh point system, it wasn't planned that way, but I knew early in the season that anyone that missed a show or didn't start a feature race would be penilized and that would pretty much put them out of the points championship. Not much you can do once the point system is in place. Next year it will be changed. I think the points spread needs to be alittle more for a winner, and spread out with more points between each position and that if you show but don't start a feature, you shouldn't be penilized so much. I don't think the outlaws has such a good system either, Look at Joey with 18 wins and he's only in 3rd, I haven't compared the other finishing positions to see why he is only in 3rd, but to me, that does look strange. But, anyway, it's going to be along winter, I'm bored already, so we should be able to come up with a good, fair points system by April 2010. Until then, everyone have a good winter and maybe we will see some of you during the winter.
