9/5/09
Knoxville Raceway
Season Championship
23 410s
31 360s
410s
Lynton Jeffrey (5th car out to time) set quick time in qualifying at 14.889 seconds. Davey Heskin (22nd car out) was second quick, followed by Dusty Zomer (17th), Don Droud Jr. (19th), Terry McCarl (18th), Mark Dobmeier (16th), Kerry Madsen (8th), Ryan Anderson (9th), Rager Phillips (2nd) and Wayne Johnson (6th). Two tenths of a second separated quick time from 14th quick. Dobmeier was late to time, thus could start no better than 13th in the feature.
Heat one (started): 1. Calvin Landis 70 (1) 2. Brian Brown 21 (2) 3. W. Johnson 14AJ (3) 4. Madsen 55 (4) 5. Droud Jr. 47 (5) / 6. Bob Weuve 19 (7) 7. Jeffrey 12 (6) 8. Austin McCarl 17a (8)
Landis led the distance in the 8-lapper. Jeffrey avoided a tangle with Weuve at the mid-way point that could have been ugly.
Heat two (started): 1. Johnny Herrera 2w (2) 2. Josh Schneiderman 49 (1) 3. T. McCarl 24 (5) 4. Bronson Maeschen 1 (3) 5. Heskin 56 (6) / 6. Ry. Anderson 71R (4) 7. Sid Blandford Jr. 7 (8) 8. Pete Crall 1PC (7)
Herrera led flag to flag and clinched his second track championship in the process. T. McCarl worked by Maeschen, while Heskin found the low side to his liking in getting by R. Anderson for the final transfer.
Heat three (started): 1. Kaley Gharst 7K (1) 2. Skip Jackson 2 (3) 3. Dobmeier 13 (5) 4. Zomer 17G (6) 5. Phillips 10 (4) / 6. Seth Brahmer 13v (2) 7. Mike Moore 69 (7)
Gharst held the point throughout. The best heat of the night saw furious action in the third through sixth spots. Dobmeier was riding in sixth, when he passed Brahmer and Zomer in one corner. He then went by Phillips for third, and Zomer followed.
B main (started): 1. Jeffrey (1) 2. Ry. Anderson (2) 3. Brahmer (3) 4. Weuve (4) 5. Moore (6) / 6. Crall (5) 7. A. McCarl (7) 8. Blandford Jr. (8)
Jeffrey led the 8-lapper throughout. Crall reeled in Moore a few times for the final transfer, but couldn't get it done.
A main (started): 1. Zomer (7) 2. Brown (10) 3. T. McCarl (5) 4. W. Johnson (2) 5. Phillips (3) 6. Herrera (11) 7. Madsen (4) 8. Heskin (8) 9. Droud Jr. (6) 10. Gharst (15) 11. Jackson (9) 12. Landis (12) 13. Jeffrey (16) 14. Brahmer (18) 15. Weuve (19) 16. Schneiderman (14) 17. Dobmeier (13) 18. Ry. Anderson (17) 19. Maeschen (1) 20. Moore (20)
Maeschen led W. Johnson early in the 25-lapper. T. McCarl had moved into fourth by Madsen before Madsen slowed to a stop. It looked to be a problem with the hood and he repaired it and returned to a restart that saw Maeschen leading W. Johnson, Phillips, T. McCarl and Zomer. Moore turned over on the restart, but was uninjured. Zomer roared by T. McCarl and Phillips into third after the restart, and picked off W. Johnson for second next. On lap 11, he shot by Maeschen into the point. A lap later, Maeschen lost his right rear wheel and hammered the turn four wall. He was unhurt, but done. Now Zomer had T. McCarl behind him with 14 laps to go. W. Johnson was third ahead of a surging Brown and Phillips. Brown was clearly faster than the cars ahead of him and made quick work of W. Johnson before reeling in T. McCarl. He worked by with about 8 to go, and pulled up on Zomer. The leader switched his line to the high side in three and four (where hard-charger Brown was running) and held him off for $3,500, his second win of the season, and his 4th career 410 feature at Knoxville.
360s
Heat one (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Jon Agan 54 (1*) 2. Chad Humston 1m (5*) 3. Tyler Thompson 48 (4*) 4. Ryan Roberts 18 (3) 5. Alan Zoutte 33 (6) 6. Jon Corbin 4 (8) 7. Rod Richards 12 (7) DQ (no report to scales) Mark Shirshekan 3x (2, crossed fourth)
Agan led flag to flag in the 7-lapper. Humston was the mover, and Shirshekan forgot to report to the scales after finishing fourth.
Heat two (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Clint Garner 40 (1*) 2. Jonathan Cornell 28 (2*) 3. Tom Lenz 8L (4*) 4. Nate Mosher 22N (5*) 5. Ryan Bickett 17B (3) 6. Danny Heskin 6 (6) 7. Joe Beaver 53 (7) DNS - Matt Moro 2m
Garner got a good jump at the start and never looked back in a mostly single-file affair.
Heat three (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Gregg Bakker 11x (1*) 2. RJ Johnson 71 (4*) 3. Josh Padellford 34 (2*) 4. Johnny Anderson 2a (6*) 5. Tasker Phillips 7TAZ (8*) 6. Chris Schmelzle 57c (7) 7. Nate Van Haaften 3 (5) 8. Glen Hunt G74 (3)
Bakker dominated this one. RJ Johnson did well to move up, as did Anderson, who had a good battle with Padellford.
Heat four (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Dave Hall (3*) 2. Josh Higday 10 (1*) 3. Dustin Selvage 7 (5*) 4. Dennis Moore Jr. 20 (7*) 5. Jay Russell 76 (4) 6. Cody Petersen 16P (2) 7. Chad Heimbaugh 04 (6)
D. Hall worked by Higday for the lead. Further back, Selvage and Moore Jr. moved up nicely. Selvage tried to get around Higday, but settled for third.
B main (started): 1. Roberts (1) 2. Corbin (3) 3. Bickett (4) 4. Zoutte (2) / 5. Heskin (7) 6. Beaver (10) 7. Moro (14) 8. Russell (5) 9. Shirshekan (13) 10. Van Haaften (11) 11. Schmelzle (6) 12. Heimbaugh (12) 13. Richards (9) 14. Petersen (8) 15. Hunt (15)
Roberts led the way in the 10-lapper. The best action was for the last transfer. Bickett moved past Heskin and Zoutte for third, while Heskin was knocking on the door the whole time, but just fell short. Hunt took the nastiest ride you'll ever see in turn four on the checkered flag lap. His car disintegrated and the motor ended up 40 feet in front of what was left of the car. He got out on his own, but took a ride to the hospital.
A main (started): 1. Bakker (4) 2. Garner (5) 3. Cornell (2) 4. Selvage (9) 5. Agan (6) 6. Moore Jr. (12) 7. D. Hall (8) 8. Anderson (14) 9. Higday (1) 10. Humston (7) 11. Roberts (17) 12. Corbin (18) 13. Lenz (11) 14. Zoutte (20) 15. Bickett (19) 16. Thompson (10) 17. Padellford (13) 18. Mosher (15) 19. RJ Johnson (3) 20. Phillips (16)
Phillips flipped on the first try at green in the 20-lapper. Higday took the early advantage, but yielded to Cornell on lap two. Five laps later, Mosher and Thompson contacted, sending Mosher's right rear tire flying and the car into the wall. Thompson spun and flattened a left rear, which he changed in the work area. Padellford exited during the caution. The restart saw Cornell ahead of Bakker, Garner, Selvage and Agan. Bakker had a good run on the restart and roared by Cornell into a lead he would never give up. One more stoppage on lap 14 for a stopped Thompson slowed the event. Bakker was able to hold off second place Garner, Cornell, Selvage and Agan the rest of the way to grab his third career Knoxville win at $1,500. Moore Jr. was the hard-charger, leading several cars who moved up six spots.
