Pierovich Claims BCRA Midget Gold in Petaluma
By Robert Haugh

Alamo’s Scott Pierovich claimed the winner’s laurels in the famed Bay Cities Racing Association “Mighty Midgets” feature on Saturday, August 15 at the smooth and fast 3/8-mile Petaluma Speedway in the beautiful Napa wine country aboard the #11 Walker Racing-Bay Muffler Stealth/Esslinger.

After overtaking early race leader “Flying Hawaiian” Larry Peterson aboard the TNT Racesports Dave & Wendy Thurston #17T TCR/Gaerte on Lap 7, Pierovich never looked back, leading the final 24 laps en route to the victory.

With Pierovich pulling away by nearly a straightaway, late-race cautions allowed 2007 BCRA champion Justin Grant to begin gaining ground aboard the TNT Racesports Dave & Wendy Thurston #17 Spike/Esslinger, however, Grant just didn’t have the car to catch and overtake Pierovich.

Following the lead duo to the line was “Mr. Excitement” David Prickett aboard the Neverlift Motorsports #15 TCR/Van Dyne in third, Scott Nail aboard the newly acquired former Jimmy Christian #16 Stealth/Riolo Chevy, now the Neverlift team car to Prickett in fourth and fast-qualifier Shannon McQueen aboard her #7 Spike/Fontana rounding out the top five. McQueen claimed fifth by literally an inch over a hard-charging Shane Golobic in the #88 Country Builders Construction Spike/Esslinger. Golobic, scheduled to have started seventh on the grid, was forced to start from the rear in 23rd position after changing a tire during a Lap 1 caution period.

Rounding out the Top ten was Peterson in seventh, 1999 BCRA Midget champion Matt Streeter aboard his #14jr Spike/Fontana Rhino in eighth, 20th starting three-time BCRA champion Glenn Carson aboard Doug Bock’s #26 Spike/Esslinger and Cole Peard aboard the Peard Trucking #58 Twister F5/Fontana in tenth.

Former BCRA car owner champion Bill Lindsey claimed eleventh, one lap down aboard Stu Donaldson’s #8 Stealth/Pontiac with Angwin’s Britton Bock just behind aboard his #62 TCR/Esslinger in his first race in over a year with a new Esslinger ST powerplant that was purchased recently in the Midwest. Lonnie Alton claimed 13th aboard his #5a Stealth/SuperFocus.

Prior to getting one lap in, current BCRA points leader and reigning BCRA Midget champion “Young Lion” Nick Foster, Jr. spun Jim Fowler’s #1 Zero-Zero Motorsports Beast/Esslinger in Turn 1 on the opening circuit. On the ensuing restart, after completing just one lap, Chino Hills’ Austin Smith, making his BCRA debut spun his #33 Stealth/Fontana in Turn 4.

On the ensuing single-file restart, with only one lap complete, Pierovich had already raced his way to second in the Walker-Racing-Bay Muffler mount, hunting down Peterson in the lead. With Peterson stretching slightly, Pierovich began hitting his marks precisely, catching and passing Peterson on Lap 7.

Distancing himself from the field by nearly an entire straightaway, Pierovich was only slowed by cautions.

Golobic spun on lap 8 in Turn 3, relegating him to restart in the rear once again. On the restart, Pierovich once again stretched his lead over Prickett, Grant and Peterson, with Grant moving into second on Lap 11, with fast-qualifier McQueen moving into fifth from her 12th starting spot on Lap 13.

Grant began chasing Pierovich, slowly gaining ground in lapped traffic, finally catching Pierovich on lap 23 when Cody Spencer spun his #34 Stealth/SuperFocus on Lap 23 in Turn 4, bringing Grant to Pierovich’s rear bumper on the ensuing single-file restart.

On the ensuing restart, Foster flipped very hard down the front straightaway, landing so hard, a Grade 8 bolt broke off of his seat. Foster’s cartwheel-esque flip was one for the highlight reel.

After completing two more laps, 7-time BCRA champion “The Ageless Wonder” Floyd Alvis spun his #18a Champion Automotive Stealth/Gaerte spun on the front stretch, bringing out the race’s seventh caution flag. Alvis pulled off on the ensuing restart.

Looking for a way around Pierovich, Grant was seeking the double-dip win, having already won the BCRA Midget Lite feature just moments earlier.

Heading into an exciting five-lap sprint to the finish, the yellow unfurled once again as Grant chased Pierovich to the line when Smith spun in Turn 4 on lap 28, bringing up a green-white-checkered finish.

Pierovich rocketed ahead on the restart, taking the win over Grant, Prickett, Nail and McQueen.

Prickett’s third-place run, combined with last week’s fourth-place at Placerville brings “Mr. Excitement” to within six points of 2008 BCRA champion “Young Lion” Nick Foster, Jr. in the chase for the 2009 BCRA Midget championship crown.

2008 pavement Midget champion and BCRA Rookie-of-the-Year “Nitro” Nick Chivello flipped hard aboard Bob Roza’s #20 TEAM F.A.S.T. (Fighting Against Steroids Together) Beast/Esslinger during Heat 2. Chivello soared in the air after getting caught up in a gnarly rut that was later grated down.

Elk Grove’s Matt Land scratched the Tom Land #91 Spike/Chevy EcoTec prior to qualifying after spinning and damaging the car during hotlaps.

Rick Young’s #98 and #99 Stealth/RRE Chevy EcoTecs battled issues all night, with Young in the #99 and Dillon Silverman in the #98 both attempting to start the feature, but both pulling in prematurely. RRE is working on the engine mapping on the electronic fuel management system on the new budget-minded engines.

Bill Lindsey claimed Heat 1 over Bock, Tom Doherty aboard the Walker Racing-Bay Muffler #10 Stealth/Esslinger, Alton and Spencer. Before taking the lead, Bill Lindsey had been hunting down Rob Lindsey who had been leading the entire duration of the race before pillowing in smoke on lap 7.

Grant claimed Heat 2 over Prickett, Alvis, Peterson and Ryan Shupe aboard the Walker Racing-Bay Muffler #10x Stealth/Esslinger.

Nail claimed Heat 3 over Atascadero’s Randi Pankratz aboard her #8x Autoresearch/Fontana, Streeter, McQueen and Pierovich.

McQueen was fast-qualifier, setting a new track record with a 14.360 mark aboard her #7 Spike/Fontana. Three others, Golobic, Peard and Foster also broke Brian Gard’s three-year-old track record.

Foster continues leading the BCRA points standings by a mere six points over Prickett. Prickett also maintains third-place in the current USAC-Western States series standings. Visit www.bcraracing.com for more information on the BCRA Midgets. The BCRA Midgets next trek to Shasta Raceway Park on September 12.

Hope Scott Pierovich returns to Calistoga this year. His battles with Johnny Rodriguez were classic midget racing.

I would like to thank the car owner's of the TNT Racesports 17T Dave & Wendy Thurston for letting a very old friend of mine The Flying Hawaiian " Larry Peterson " to race back here in Ca. I have not seen Larry for at Least 20 years... What a surprise it was when I saw him at Ocean Speedway on Friday Aug 14
