Jonathan Allard tied for fourth in points after one night at 49th Knoxville Nationals

By Gary Thomas

Knoxville, Iowa – August 12, 2009…Despite a lengthy rain delay during opening night of the 49th annual Super Clean Knoxville Nationals, drivers were finally able to hit the track around 11pm local time and when they did Chico, California's Jonathan Allard proceeded to put together a strong evening of competition to end up tied for fourth in points after one night of racing.

Allard began the evening by qualifying a strong fifth quick out of 50 entrants aboard the Williams Motorsports, K&N Filters, Red Line Oil No. 0 sprinter. The heavy rain prior the start of the evening however, left the track very fast and narrow for much of the night and a seventh place finish in the heat race after starting eighth put "JA" into the b-main. In fact the top-13 qualifiers failed to make the direct transfer out of the heats.

A stout b-main event saw Allard line-up in third and put pressure on second running Paul McMahan over the early circuits, before settling down and running the remainder of the 12 lap race in third to transfer into the feature. Starting 23rd the two-time King of California advanced his way forward and got up to as high as 13th before crossing the checkered flag in 14th after 25 laps of racing.

Following the night Allard sits tied with McMahan for fourth in the overall Knoxville Nationals points, but will officially be fifth with McMahan having the tie-breaker due to his faster qualifying time. The Nationals points after one night sees three-time defending winner Donny Schatz on top with Sam Hafertepe Jr, Tim Shaffer, McMahan, Allard, Shane Stewart, Lucas Wolfe, Craig Dollansky, Jason Johnson and Greg Wilson rounding out the top 10.

The second batch of qualifiers of will go tonight to see where the overall points stack up going into Friday and Saturday nights. Catch all of Saturday's action live on SPEED starting at 7pm west coast time.

Yeah we won 't know if he's in the amain till after tonight. It'll be close I think because the point totals will be better tonight with a wider and slicker track, unless of course it dumps rain again before the races lol
