Sammy Swindell Pockets $10,000 in 14th Annual Front Row Challenge!

by Bill Wright

August 10, 2009 (Oskaloosa, IA) - Sammy Swindell showed patience, and emerged victorious in the 14th Annual Musco Lighting Front Row Challenge at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa on Monday. The win came after a rain delay lasting over three hours. Very few of the large throng of fans in attendance left, despite the lengthy delay in the All Star Circuit of Champions event.

Swindell earned the pole by virtue of a draw featuring the top eight qualifiers making it through their heats. The popular "King of the Hill" match races were scrapped when a brief, but heavy shower hit after the heat races. Both Swindell and Joey Saldana refused the $50,000 "Front Row Challenge", citing the heavy track conditions as a reason. Forty-five cars filled the pit area for the night's events.

The Germantown, Tennessee driver was aboard the Tom Rolfe #10, and led from start to finish in the 25-lapper. Joey Saldana gave the leader a brief challenge after a lap six restart for a stalled Daryn Pittman, but that was the only real threat to the veteran's winning run. Wayne Johnson had moved up into the top ten from his row seven starting position, but joined Pittman as a lap six retiree. The restart saw Swindell leading Saldana, Donny Schatz, Craig Dollansky and Cale Conley.

Just when the leaders approached lapped traffic on lap 16, Tyler Walker's mount went up in smoke, and Johnny Herrera stalled a lap later. The nine lap dash to the finish saw Swindell hold off all challengers. Dollansky shot under Schatz after the final restart to complete the podium finish, while Schatz, Lance Dewease, Conley, Danny Lasoski, Dale Blaney, Kraig Kinser and Tim Kaeding rounded out the top ten finishers.

Dewease broke Kasey Kahne's event record one-lap time in qualifying with a circuit of 15.231 seconds. Bronson Maeschen, Johnson, Jack Dover and Sam Hafertepe Jr. won 8-lap heats. All heat winners received a Butlerbuilt steering wheel and HRP nose wing kit for their efforts. Maeschen also received a top wing from HRP as he is a customer. Maeschen also won a new Winters' rear-end after topping the drivers finishing first and second in a foot race following the heat events.

So the top eight finished exactly where they started?

Heavy track after a rain delay. Hard to pass on a track like that, but good they even got it in.

I see there was alot of B Main cars that didn't even start. Was this because the track was heavy and they knew they couldn't pass? Looking at the A main, Jack Dover was the only guy that passed anybody. I was mad I couldn't make it this year, but it looks like it was a typical Osky freight train. I think the format may need to change for this event because nobody is ever going to take that challenge again. You get that many good cars and a follow the leader track the front row challenge is not even an option anymore. My two cents.

One format I have had in the back of the mind for a while which could be a solution for this race is to still offer a "Front Row Challenge", but have the pole sitter nominate how far back he wants to start, with a bonus $2,000 per spot he sacrifices if he can win it. Eg. He goes back to start out of 5, he is racing for a $10K bonus. He goes back to start out of 10, he is racing for a $20K bonus. Would add some intrigue at the pre-race interview asking him exactly how far he going to go back! He can look at the lineup and take a true gamble on getting to the front. Would be great for the crowd. At the very least, surely they would give it a crack and take a "Front Row Challenge" of some sort.

the days of someone coming from thre back and winning are over with the KKR titans or TSR titan out there. especially on a big track. put them on a bull ring. move this race to US 36 and it might be possible.

Schatz did it in Florida this year, after spinning out and restarting at the back of the field. That field had Steve, Sammy, Joey, Craig, and the Posse's best...

We left after the rain delay tonight at Osky and was sleeping well by the time this one finished.

It did not rain one mile from the track, what a drag...

If the track is heavy, no wing.  If its slick put the wings on.  If they're going to have a rule book an inch thick, they are going to have to unhook em if its heavy.

My question is how can Pittman who was in the B start ahead of Maschen, Johnson, and Walker who all transfered by finishing 1st or 2nd in their heats? Now thats screwed up in my opinion.

Pittman was 3rd quick... so probably got his time spot back... just a guess??

*** not that I think it is right for anyone in the B-Main to start anywhere but the tail of the A...

It was setting up to be a fun night, but the tail end of a storm caught us and made the track too fast for passing. To make matters worse, we were "treated" to some bozo announcer from Missouri yelling into the mic for 3 hours during the delay and when fans started to boo after waiting patiently for 3 hours during the rain delay, he asks if any of us are on a time schedule. I hope he's not back tonight.

some promoters/announcers understand not every fan in the stands have motorhomes or $ for a motel and try to hurry things along so those fans can get on the road and get home.

Like US 36 a couple of weeks ago when the All-stars were in. They had 2 support classes on a Weds night. if you want people to come back next year end the night at a decent time. With just sprints and the A-mods i think everyone would have been happy. but by the time the 2 Mod features were over EVERY sprint car team was packed up and only a few left in the pits period.

OMG...they didn't give Scotty Cook a microphone, did they?

I know Justin Zoch does a good job. Did he have any decent help, since Gibson and Bokhoven took their egos and declined to participate?

I heard they give charter members of Columbia's Black & Gold bar access to a microphone in Oskaloosa for two days in August... one of the perks of being a Tigers fan I guess... haha

Terry had a great show going and was setting up for a great King of the Hill race, B, and A. Stacked field of 45 cars. Track was great and would have been very racy come Feature time and I'm confident there would have been a lot of passing if not for the rain. They had no chance of working that much water in and getting a wide racy track.

Nothing at all wrong with the format, the promotor, or the track...mother nature ruined this one on her own.

Completely agree with you there. It was looking like the track was shaping up real nice before the rains came. I'm sure it would have been a great race had it stayed dry.
