1st Annual Casey's USAC Knoxville Non-wing Nationals Pits USAC Stars Versus Knoxville's Best!

(Bill W) It will be a shootout at the 1st Annual Casey's USAC Knoxville Non-wing Nationals this Sunday night, August 9! The best of the United States Auto Club will take on the Knoxville 410 point leader as well as other defenders of the home turf in a battle for $5,000!

Expected to compete at the Nationals are point leader, and driver of the Tony Stewart Racing #20 Levi Jones, triple crown and 2008 Ultimate Challenge champion, "Double D" Dave Darland, midget track record holder at the Belleville High Banks, Cole Whitt, triple crown and 2006 Ultimate Challenge winner, Jerry Coons Jr., Tracy Hines, "The Demon" Damion Gardner, Darren Hagen and "The Worm" Brad Sweet in the Kasey Kahne entry, to name just a few.

Several top contenders who usually fashion a "barn door" on top of their sprinter are expected to compete, and improve their chances at hte Cox Design and Metal Fabrication Iowa Speedweeks "Mr. Sprint Car" title. Among them, are Knoxville 410 point leader, "Hollywood" Johnny Herrera, two-time and defending "Mr. Sprint Car" champion, Wayne Johnson, young gun "Showtime" Kaley Gharst, and Warsaw, Missouri's Jesse "The Rocket" Hockett who bested USAC's brass twice in one night earlier this year at the Grandview Speedway in Pennsylvania! Many more drivers are expected!

USAC-sanctioned non-winged sprint car racing will play a big part in the Iowa Speed Weeks this year, with the August 9 Casey's General Stores Non-Winged Knoxville Nationals taking place between the July 31 pavement event in Newton and the August 11 race in Oskaloosa. "With Casey's marketing support and these three traditional non-winged sprint car events being so close together we should be able to draw a whole new crowd to Knoxville and Iowa for some great racing," stated Knoxville's Race Director Ralph Capitani. "For us at Knoxville Raceway, this event provides a perfect compliment between the 360 Knoxville Nationals August 6-8 and the 49th Annual Knoxville Nationals August 12-15. In fact, it will be interesting to see which winged sprint car drivers take their 'lids' off to compete against the best-of-the-best non-winged sprint car drivers in this inaugural Casey's-sponsored national championship event on Sunday, August 9."

Casey's General Stores has 1,478 locations in 9 states with 418 of those stores in Iowa. "Casey's has always had a great relationship with Knoxville and this event seemed like a natural extension of our cooperative efforts". Said Angela Wood of Casey's. "Our involvement in racing reaches far and wide through many different outlets, and our involvement with Knoxville assists us by reaching more people through different creative efforts."

Knoxville's popular 305 winged sprint class will also be in action!

That's a real shame; I really wanted those guy's to see a good show, and see how it's done.

The last time SCRA was there the track was crap, and that's how a lot of people remember that show. It's kind of like wanting to show off the new baby that your so proud of, but the lights keep going off.

Half the lies they tell about me aren't true.

As i am working about 3 hours from the track, had to go there and watch some racing. paid for tickets, went in and looked for seats, found a suitable spot, en-route to the seats, started talking to another fan, found out he is from southern california, learned he is the infamous ralphie, that has a section named after him at perris. sat down and here came the rain, and then the loudspeaker announcement about it being cancelled. watched all the haulers load up and head out. so on my first trip to knoxville raceway, i got to sit in the stands and watch a couple pickup trucks make some laps. so maybe soon i can get some sprint car racing in.

Last I knew father and son are back there alone (no crew) and will be running Oskaloosa tonight after that huge disappointment at Knoxville. (rain out). They also said they will be back in time to run Victorville this weekend. You got to love the commitment.

If you buy Rob a beer be sure to do it when there are no other people around, you know how wild and crazy he gets when there is alcohol in his blood.
