I am so sad to report that Billy passed away this morning. We have lost a great champion in racing and in life. Please think of his family and the huge group of friends he leaves behind today.
It's a sad day.

With every sport there is the founding group and then the early pioneers, Billy blasted into the CRA days and peppered the history books with fast times, heat race and main event wins with many new track records, at the time he was racing against the "youngsters" and beat them at their own game. Billy was recently interviewed and given plenty of opportunity to 'blow his own horn' and choose to be very humble and make mention of the many names that helped both himself and others along the way, mention was made also to folks that he felt deserved life long recognition for their input into the sport. While active as a driver and also as a car owner everyone knew Billy was in the pits for one reason or another, as a driver he was a factor, as a car owner his car was amoung the best looking. For those that didn't know Billy 'back in the day', you missed an interesting time in sprint car racing. Reading the history books it is easier to find him under NTR then his own name. Probably thought of an invader at the time, 40 some years later CRA has lost one of the more colorful pioneers of the sport.

Billy was truly one of the nicest people in racing. A gentleman driving cars better suited to hooligans. Never unwilling to help or give advice.
Probably my favorite Billy Wilkerson story involved the time he was asked to help a driver at Ascot who was trying to find speed. Billy told him that he wasn't driving the car far enough into the corner before lifting. Billy went down into the corner and told the guy "don't lift until you get to where I am standing" So Billy is standing there for a while while the cars are hot-lapping away. Then an old friend called out to him from farther down into the corner. Billy being the nice guy he was, walked over to shake hands and the next thing he heard was a car flipping. He had forgotten about his student who had taken Billy very seriously at his word and driven it waaay into the corner to where Billy was standing before lifting. Godspeed Billy.
