Santa Maria, CA 8-5-09...Saturday night's "Z93.3 KZOZ Night at the Races" is a big event for sprint car fans with 40 plus of California's top cars and drivers expected for the VRA Grand Slam/West Coast 360 Sprint Car finale. Papich Construction IMCA Modifieds and Toste Grading & Paving Mini Stocks will also be in action. KZOZ's Jeff and Jeramy of the Jeff and Jeramy show will be guest pit announcers.
*Stockton's Jonathan Henry has a 6 point lead over Davey Pombo, of Kerman, in the battle for the Grand Slam championship and it will all be decided Saturday night. Kevin Kierce, of Reseda, and Troy Rutherford, of Ojai, are also in the running, trailing the leader by 26 and 28 points respectively. San Bernardino's Don Gansen is 44 points behind in fifth.
*Two Arroyo Grande drivers and three from Santa Maria fill the top-five positions in the Modified division with the A.G. drivers first and third, and Chad Weber in the lead. Weber has a 20 point edge over Doug Thornton and is 35 points up on Tony Toste. Danny Lauer is 46 markers behind in fourth and fifth place Daylan Coffey is 67 points off the pace.
*Tom Grzincic, of Atascadero, is "king" of the Mini Stock division this season. In 10 events Grzincic has a second, a third, and eight straight first place main event victories. Grzincic's lead over second place Jeremy Heroux, of Nipomo, is 60 markers. The only thing that has kept Heroux this close is 8 top-five finishes, including four seconds and three thirds. Nipomo drivers Kurt Larsen (-114) and Dustin Ensign (-136), and Santa Barbara's Ben Caswell (-152) are third through fifth in the standings.
*Spectator gates for Saturday night's event will open at 3:00 p.m., with qualifying at 5:00 p.m. and racing at 6:00 p.m. Ticket prices will be: $16.00 for adults, $14.00 for seniors & military and their spouses, $5.00 for children 6 to 12, five and under free.

Should be Kevin's Big Chance. I don't know if Henry has ever run at SMS (anyone know for sure?) and Davey's had poor luck at SMS lately. Rich Vanderweerd is probably the guy to beat right now, but Kierce does know this track.
If you're coming in for this, I suggest getting in early. Parking at SMS for the bigger shows comes at a premium by 6:00 pm. My own vehicle was covered with clay after the recent winged sprint show because the only parking spots left were right over the turn one-two wall.

True, Jonathon Henry has run SMS in the past. He'll be one to watch.
I also understand that another Kruseman student is about to reappear at Santa Maria this weekend.
Welcome back Austin Mero - anyone else confirm?
