In memory of Dick Stoneking, Oquawka, IL, who tragically lost his life 30 years ago at Knoxville, Iowa on July 21st, 1979 at the young age of 26. Dick was the son of veteran sprint car driver Duane "Stoney" Stoneking. Dick won 3 track championships at 34 Raceway and was getting his start at Knoxville. Dick was a nice friendly guy with a good sense of humor who had many friends throughout Western Illinois and Eastern Iowa. It's hard to believe that 30 years have past. Keeping our friend Dick and the #20 in our memories today. Comments or pictures would be welcomed in Dick's honor.

Thank you Bill and Lee for the very nice tribute and pictures remembering Dick. It's really hard to believe that 30 years has past. It's so comforting to know that people haven't forgotten and really remember his past accomplishments and what a friendly, fun guy he was! Again thanks so much! Janice Ator and the Stoneking family

One of my "Work-shop" treasures is a trophy from one of Stoney's many Feature wins

I remember that night well...I was a young teenager and had kissed my new girlfriend for the first time in the grandstands about 30 minutes before the accident...wow..the weird things you remember as you get old....and correct me if I am wrong, but I believe, due to the Larson/Dawley tradgedy the week before I think Kville made wings optional for the week Stoney was killed and I believe he was one of the few cars that wasn't running a wing..not that it would of mattered in the kind of accident that happened..somebody correct me if I'm wrong about this...but thats how I remember it...
Porshe Pete...keep posting these old k'ville photos..it's the best thing on this board !!!!

You are correct Dick didn't have a wing on. He was the last car in the race and the leaders were already going down the back-chute when he started flipping and hitting the flagstand. Thank goodness the racers saw fairgrounds security waving their orange flashlights at the pit-gate to get their attention to get them stopped before they came upon the wreck..

Lee, great picture's also loved the Dawley-Larsen picture's as well, that was a very sad summer growing up in Iowa and going to the races in Knoxville,as my Family was good friends with Roger & Sherry and the girls,Glad all 3 of these Champions were remembered 30 yrs later. I do have a question though, was Dick ever inducted in the Knoxville raceway hall of fame? If he hans't and I hope he has he deserve's to be!!!Although I never knew Dick personally, I still have a scrap book that has picture's of all 3 of these drivers.

Wow. Look at the changes in sprint cars in 30 years. In a sense, they don't even seem to be the same kind of racecars over a 30 year evolution. I'd bet that more on the cars have changed verses parts that have stayed the same over the years.

This car is etched into my memory. At the time of Dick's accident my family lived in Gladstone, IL. The accident would have happened just before I turned 2 so I don't have any memories of Dick or of him racing. However my father must have known him because we had a painting of this car in our homes for years. Dad has since passed the painting on to Dick's daughter.
There's been a couple of these tribute posts for Dick, and I know I forwarded one to Dad so he could read it.
