We got to talking about bristol the other night at softball and I said if it was an area with great climate in February it would be a great place for the superbowl to be held. Heck if they can build a dirt track constructing a football field should not be a problem. Kind of fun to think about. Now the question. Things got going and he told me there would not be enough room, I said BS. I bet him at Kville you could put 4 football fields on the infield at Kville. To accomplish this you would need an area 720' in length by about 321' in width. I have been on the infield there a bunch of times and that seems very possible. He swears I am nuts but I think it is at least that big. What do you think. Come on Savage you should know stats like this, look it up when you are not dreaming of Mr. Favre in Purple. By the way real men dont wear "PURPLE".

Going strictly by square foot you could fit 8 football fields inside the racing surface at Knoxville. According to my calculations(take it for what it's worth) there are 387,200sf in a 1/2 mile circle(or oval, or square for that matter). 8 football fields would total 360,000sf. I hope you made a substantial bet on this one bigshow. Somebody better verify my math though.

You could easily put a football field inside any half mile track. A regular running track goes around the outside of most high school football fields and that track is a quarter mile. Could you imagine the Super Bowl at Bristol? I think the amount of people would be staggering considering you could the extra seating you could put in on the track and around the field. The bad part would be the spectators would feel like they are watching the game from another county.

There was talk of a U of Tenn - Virgina tech game inside Bristol a few years ago.
http://www.nascar.com/2005/news/headlines/cup/08/26/bruton.smith.26/index.html
the article also says that there WAS an exhibition NFL game between Washington and Philly held at the track in September of 1961.
There is a 5/8's mile dirt track in Pecatonica IL that has a high school field inside and there is plenty of room for parking and probably another field inside. Bowman-Gray Stadium is a 1/4 mile asphalt track that is also home to a college team.
You could argue that the weather wouldn't be conducive to a Super Bowl in Feb though....they have had snow all the way up to April during their first NASCAR weekend of the year.

My Dad used to race midgets around the old Joliet Stadium back in the 70's. And it was the running track, 1/4 mile in length. Bristol would be awesome for anything, bass fishing, concerts, tractor pulls, but by far it was the BEST at sprint car racing. Miss that stuff.

I just pulled up mapquest and panned down the aerial photo to the high school football field in knoxville. I traced the field out generously. Panned back up to the track and it appears as it 4 football fields would easily fit either 2x2 or 4 running n/s. It looks like you could run 3 in the middle e/w and 2 at the ends n/s so it looks as if 5 would fit for sure. Thanks for the some of the history. The bet was not that big mostly because I thought I was going to lose so anyways it always feels good to be right.......

Oops, forgot the endzones. 8 football fields would total 432,000sf.

At Calistoga the high school team used to play their football games in the infield. I once shot pics there from a spotters tower outside of turn 1 and it was as loud and dirty as any place I've ever shot from, but spectacular. Take It Easy....

How about building a racetrack inside of ARROWHEAD and running some sprinters in there.....now that would be awesome. Beside Heinz Field my absolute favorite stadium to watch football.

Farve in Purple? I'll believe it when I see him suit up on the first day of REGULAR season, not until then.
As far as widths/lengths of the Knoxville Raceway? I can only tell you the measurements of objects that have been laid upon that track, not the actual being itself.....

Windber was a neat little Late Model track here in PA that closed about 15 years ago. The track was also a speedway around a football field. Out of 150+ tracks for me, that was the only place where I ever saw the lap counter start at the total number of laps and count backward toward zero for each race.

Knoxville counts backwords don't they? I always like that format better than the "counting up".

How about Soldier's Field in Chicago, where the Bears suck, opps--where other teams play football against the Bears? They used to run midgets there around the perimeter of the field.
