A very large crowd showed up to help support the Toys For Tots campaign at “America’s Home Track” Eagle Raceway. Adults donating a new toy received $5 off of their front gate admission. As always, the fans were not disappointed as the racing was fast and furious throughout the program.
The first race on the card was the completion of the red flagged Budweiser 360 Sprint A Main from July 4th. Gene Acklund picked up where he left off by leading the field in his #14G as they came around to complete the first circuit of this week on lap #10. In hot pursuit were the 96KX of Adam Gullion, Gage Dorr’s #17, the 23 of Terry Holliman and Tadd Holliman in the 23R. On lap 13 Mike Boston’s #88 overtook the 23R for fifth. With just 4 laps left the power steering broke in the 23, sending Terry Holliman into the turn 2 wall. That allowed Boston to move up to fourth as the caution flag flew. Boston advanced 1 more position on the last lap. The finishing order was Acklund, Gullion, Boston, Dorr and Tadd Holliman.
“At first, I wished they had called the race official last week; but now there’s no ifs or buts and I’m thrilled. I was kind of surprised to hear that my lap times were 1/2 second better than everyone else’s” Acklund said. He continued by stating “I want to thank my wife for putting her money into the motor. I had to give up a basement remodel for the rest, but it was worth everything to be able to get this win.”
Acklund’s sponsors include Colby Ridge, Ironwood Builders, Bluestem Nursery and Vineyard and Acklund Concrete.
Next was the postponed Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modified Feature from last week. On the first lap Dylan Smith’s #95 suffered heavy damage to his race car and a yellow flag was thrown in order to clear the debris. Smith went to the pits to attempt repairs as did the #4 of Roger “Chevy” Hadan who had suffered a flat left rear tire. Both cars returned to tag the rear of the field. After the restart Ed “Doc” Raines’ 11AA was in the lead with Jerry Trejo’s 4T in second, Doug Deterding’s 13 in third and the 86 of Justin Wulf in fourth. Terry Richards moved his #1R to the inside of Wulf on lap 8 and then past Deterding for third the following lap as Dan Helson also got past Deterding to take fourth. On lap 10 Trejo was forced to go to the infield with a flat left rear. That made the running order Raines, Richards, Nelson, Wulf and Deterding. Both Richards and Nelson moved under Raines with 5 to go as Raines chased up the racetrack in turns 3 & 4. Deterding managed to make the only other move in the waning laps as he got around Wulf to take fourth. The top four were Richards, Nelson, Raines and Deterding.
Richards started the interwiew by saying “It was good to finally win here at Eagle again, because we decided to concentrate on running here this year. I was really excited to win, with the high caliber of the competition here”. He concluded by stating “I want to thank Gary & Barb Zlab for their support all year, and of course the rest of my sponsors. Piedmont Auto Care, Richards Machine for all of the horsepower, Loos Construction, Jeff Taylor Motorsports, Larry Shaw’s Race Cars and JFR Graphics.”
The regular show was then run. The only incidents in the heat races and B Features were in the second Budweiser 360 Sprint heat when the 87J of Josh LaPage spun then flipped in turn 2, and the 3rd sprint heat saw Bobby Becker’s 8B catch a rut in turn 3 and go flipping into turn 4. Both drivers were uninjured, but their cars were finished for the evening.
The Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compacts A Feature saw the 16T of Tyler Saathoff lead the first lap followed by Jessie Fuller’s 15, Brandon Thornton’s 21T and the 5 of Larry Cronin. Jeff Davis’ 32J came to a halt in turn 2 on the second circuit and the yellow caution lights were turned on. The restart saw Thornton and Cronin both pass Fuller to snag second and third. Thornton moved past Saathoff with 8 laps left as Fuller moved up to third. Jeremy Noonan advanced to third with 6 laps remaining and 2 laps later moved up to second. The final caution flag of the race was displayed with 3 laps left as Cronin spun in turn 2 and was sent to the pits as his rear bumper cover had nearly been torn off his racer. Joey Danley’s 14 came all the way up to 4 with 2 laps to go, but fell back behind both Elliot Halvorsen’s 22 and Fuller. The official finish saw Thornton winning, followed by Noonan, Saathoff, Halvorsen and Fuller.
“It was nice to win again on such a fast, tacky track” Thornton stated. He finished by saying “I want to thank Chad Basinger for all his help with the welding, and to tell him I’ll be back this week because on the last lap I broke the steering column completely off of it’s brackets”.
Next up was the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A. Joe Ryan’s #32 brought the field back to the flag stand on lap #1 with Dan Jackson’s 98, Joe Schidler’s 00 and Josh Kennell’s 71K rounding out the top 4. Don Hall Jr.’s 92 vaulted all the way up to third on lap 2 as Schidler fell to fifth. Kennel split Jackson and Hall with 8 to go to grab second place and Hall also got past Jackson to grab third. Hall returned the favor with 6 left as he moved around Kennell. With 4 left Roy Armstrong advanced to fourth in the 6A. At the checkers it was Ryan getting his first ever feature win followed by Hall Jr., Kennel, Armstrong and the 22k of Kevin Anderson.
“I felt really good getting my first win tonight, especially racing against a tough group of guys like we have here at Eagle” Ryan said. Ryan also stated “I need to thank my Dad, Jeff, Steve, Low Budget Customs and Bill’s Service”.
Ed “Doc” Raines held the point as the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds took to the track for their A Main. He was followed by Dan Nelson in the 94, Rik Gropp in the V45 and the 57 of Brian Cuddly. Nelson got around Raines for the lead on lap 2 and the caution came out the next time around as Cuddly spun in turn four. That made the order Nelson, Raines, Gropp, Nathan Landauer’s 11N and the 96J of Johnny Saathoff. The restart saw Gropp pass Raines and Saathoff overtake Landauer to take fourth. Saathoff advanced a position on each of the next two laps to move up to second. He lost second to Gropp on the following lap however. Matt Richards moved into fourth with 7 laps down and Saathoff again passed Gropp for second the next lap. Only 2 more circuits were in the record books when Saathoff grabbed the lead from Nelson. With 8 to go Dylan Smith advanced to third in the back-up 95 car and Jordan Grabouski’s #30 came up to fourth the next lap. After the field was shown the white flag Richards spun in turn 2 resulting in a green, white, checkered finish. Smith got around Nelson on the restart to take second place. At the checkers it was Saathoff, Smith, Nelson and Grabouski.
“I wish that #300 could have been here at Eagle” Saathoff said, “but it’s good to finally get my first win of the year here”. “We’ve had lots of chances so far this season, but things just didn’t go right for us” he continued. “I want to thank the people who take care of my car every week first. Damian Anderson, Jeremy Meyer and Benji Lee give me a great car every week. And, of course there’s the fans. They’re the ones we put on a show for each week, and we appreciate their coming out” he concluded. Saathoff’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Pinnacle Bank, JR Motorsports and Toobie’s Lumber.
The last A Feature race of the evening was for the Budwesier 360 Sprints. Adam Gullion’s 96KX led with Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35AB in second, Gage Dorr’s 17 in third and the 14G of Gene Acklund in fourth as they completed the first lap. Jeff Lowery’s 45 moved past Acklund on lap 2, only to lose the position the next time around to the 88 of Mike Boston. Boston advanced 2 more positions on lap four and then took the lead on lap 8 as he used the cushion in turns 1 & 2. Roger Sluka brought out a yellow flag on lap 10 as his X29 spun to a halt in turns 1 & 2. At that time it was Boston, Gullion, Grossenbacher and Dorr. On the restart Lowery again moved up to fourth. The next lap saw the red lights glow as Dorr made contact with the 75 of Tyler Blank in turn 1 and went flipping. Both cars had to be taken to the pits behind wreckers. Gullion relinquished his position with 11 to go, falling to fourth when he went extremely high in turn four allowing both Grossenbacher and Lowery to pass him. Lowery and Acklund made contact with 7 laps left resulting in the last caution of the night. The final finishing order was Boston, Grossenbacher, Gullion, Acklund and the 23R of Tadd Holliman.
“Roger and the crew gave us another awesome track tonight, and thanks to Rick and Michelle Bowers the car worked really great as usual” Mike related. Boston’s sponsors include Trackside Bar and Grill, D & K Drywall and Eckley Racing Engines.
The regular season continues next Saturday as Jack Daniels presents the Mini-Vanley Cup. Once again the Eagle Raceway Mini-vans will be racing.
