15 sprint cars. Highlight of the night was the weak 4 car wheelie contest..
Hope Mr. Kearns does something for the packed house to make up for this wasted night!

Lights went out near the end of the 4 banger main event so never even got to the IMCA mod main or GSC main. Rumor has it a transformer blew. Not even one good pass during the two sprint car heat races.

The place really =was= packed like a Japanese commuter train.
I guess it had been some time since Brent, Tyler, Evan, Kevin, Danny F. and the boys have come down to SMS. USAC Silver Crown monster Bud K. was there tonight, as well. Brent "won" the wheelie "contest" by fan acclamation (though he =did= do the best wheelies of the four who participated).
Too bad about the lights; SMS is looking pretty sharp these days, but the scoreboard failed after the time trials, then... fzzzzzzt.
No one can blame Dave Swindell for =this= deal, however. Hahahahahaha.

OOOPS !!!
I hear the mods running so from my backyard. Maybe someone will post results shortly. Race fans here on the Central Coast are going to have to wait until August 8th for a good sprint car show.

15 sprinters playing follow the leader with barn doors? What's up with that?

Glad you didn't drive up here lunatic. You'd been whining like a little girl who lost her barbie.
Not much passing in the mod heats either. At least the car count was good for the mods!!!

That was one of the most bizzare racing events I have been to at SMS....From parking in the sticks to the wheelie contest (with Kaeding having his date hanging off the back of his car while doing wheelies) To the transformer fuse blowing,...The usual bash fest with the imca mods ...to Tyler Walker just smoking the field.....Geez Chris thanks for the awesome entertainment! (Im sure Chris is glad to have this one in the books)....But still it was fun and Chris keep up the awesome work!

Agreeing completely with FerrinMotorsport, Chris had his hands =really= full last night with the scoreboard getting screwy (at least they have one here; Manzy went without theirs for what, 15 years?); 3000 people in a place that's full at 2000; providing a van for people who had to park in Nipomo (haha); the interminable, 50-mile-per-hour mini-stock main; barely enough room in the pits for all the trailer rigs (let alone the cars themselves); and yada yada yada.
The world is not "perfect" anywhere, but this guy =tries= really hard.
If I have one (possibly) "practical" criticism, it might be that he's often trying to run too many different sanctions at the same time (tho that was more of a problem last week when several mods locked horns for a half hour, and other times, than this) causing unforeseen events to drive the main attraction to 11:00 pm green flags up here in what is get-up-at-3:00-am farm country.

You knew what you were getting in to......why did you attend? You are a non-wing guy, why the hell did you go, so you could start up the usual sh*t about "its traditional sprint cars or nothing"? You were able to see the three BEST sprint car divers in the western states, Allard, Brent and Tyler, appreciate it.

I was there (pix to come shortly). IMHO the Modified main was a bigger crashfest than the Mini Stock main. The track was already plenty moist when I got there about 3:45, but they watered it down some more. Wish I'd had the tear-off concession! Two sets of hot-lap sessions for the sprints, and a whole bunch of lower division racing didn't make a dent in the moisture. It was tacky fast all night.
The crowd hung in there amazingly well considering the long delay to get the lights back on, and they were clearly enjoying the local divisions. Chris Kearns is definitely working hard at promoting. I hope he is successful and can keep the place open for years to come!

Sorry sir, I did not attend the race Saturday night. I did, however, go to a race at SMS about a month ago and I was highly impressed with the facility. To be honest, I was just surprised that only fourteen GSC cars showed up on Saturday night; it blows my mind. Maybe the people that make the schedules for this series should give the new promoter at SMS a chance, and not book a date on the same night as a $5000 to win event up north.

I am a die hard SCRA fan, but I went to SMS and the GSC put on a great show.
First time I have ever seen a wheelie contest, BK and Tarlton drug the push bar the entire front stretch.
Kearns did a masterful job in keeping the crowd informed about the blackout, and PGE had it fixed in 45 mins.
I don't care if they had wings or not, 11 second laps and never breathing the throttle all the way through the main is somthing to see

This post has gone from 15 cars, to 14 cars.
Well there was 16. If you are going to be wrong, help me out and be wrong in the other direction. I had hoped paying $500 to start and having a $1000 wheelie contest, would bring more cars. The 16 that showed up did a great job and I didnt hear one complaint while going thru the crowd. I make next years event bigger and better !!!
To KB Rocks, if that night was a "waste of time", I got bad news for you. You are going to have a lot of disappointments in life, cuz you are obviously very hard to please. The Wheelie contest was far from weak. Even the racers and crews were getting excited.
I will try and make next years show more exciting. (with the lights on)

And just who are you - the Board Monitor? No doubt the three drivers you mentioned are very good, but not, "the three Best sprint car drivers in the western states." You get a thrill watching Tyler Walker run away from a short field of super modifieds. That had to be thrilling - sitting there eating your popcorn watching all the passing and slide jobs at Santa Maria (sarcasm intended). Go play on the Norcal Board - oh wait, they don't like you either! Congratulations to Chris Kearns for a great job of promoting his race track.

Chris Kearns has no need to defend his work. The big crowd that stayed til the very end - even through the ~45 minute power failure - says it all. The car count may have been short, but they were mostly quality cars. Well done Chris!

The transformer blew out during a WoO race at Tulare a few years ago - maybe 2006? - and left the field in the A-main in total darkness. I was sure there was going to be a huge melee after that, but everyone was able to get their cars stopped in one piece.
As for the car count - that's more of a reflection of the general car counts the GSC has been getting at a lot of tracks lately. I believe the season opener at Tulare had similar numbers. There aren't a lot of local winged guys who are going to help add to the car counts in the Central Coast.
This is why California needs to go either 360 or 410 with their winged shows. Combining the Civil War Series and GSC into one promotion is so obviously the way to go, it isn't even funny.
