 From USACracing.com INDIANAPOLIS
? Bryan Clauson is doing well after nearly a two-month layoff following
an accident in September at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. Clauson,
of Noblesville, Ind., injured a vertebrate in his neck after flipping
multiple times on the 3/8-mile track in USAC National Sprint Car Series
competition. He was told the following day his season would be final at
that point.
Since, Clauson has been fitted for a neck brace and quietly eyeing a return.
Never
out of the loop and regularly checking in on the action on websites,
message boards, fielding phone calls and even attending some races
himself, he is constantly in contact with Keith Kunz Motorsports
teammate Darren Hagen and his substitute, Brady Bacon.
On
Thursday night, Clauson sat eagerly on his computer at home in
Noblesville, following the "Budweiser Oval Nationals" preliminary
through updates on the internet. He felt compelled to know what was
going on at the half-mile with some of his closest friends.
While he followed the race online, he acknowledged he was consistently getting better.
"I'm
feeling really good," Clauson said. "I've gotten a few exercises from
Dr. Trammel, and those have really helped getting the mobility back in
my neck. Right now I'm pretty much cleared to do anything but driver a
race car, but if all goes well, I should be completely healed up and
back to normal here in about four weeks.
The layoff has kept Clauson busy doing other things, like concentrating being a normal teenager, for one.
"Since
the accident, I've just been taking it easy and kind of being a normal
kid," the 17-year-old said. "I've gotten to do some of the things here
lately that usually our busy schedule doesn't allow, so in that respect
it's been refreshing. I've been spending a lot of time with friends,
and they have really helped me through this whole deal. Besides that,
I've had a lot of school work to make up, but I got caught up pretty
quick, because I had a lot of extra spare time."
Clauson said he's unsure exactly when he will be back, but hopes to get into the cockpit of a car sooner than later.
"I
go to the doctor again on Nov. 29 and hopefully I'll be cleared by
then, but we are not going to rush things," he said. "I want to make
sure I'm 110 percent before I come back. If I'm not ready by Orlando
(next month), it will be Chili Bowl."
Despite the accident, Clauson is still in the Top 10 in the National Sprint and Midget point standings.
