18 sprints on hand.

Matt Sherrell won. Danny Smith took the point for about 30 yards midway but eventually settled for 2nd. Rafe Essary was 3rd. Evan Sewell, Mike Goodman (in the 4am) and Jamie Passmore ran right behind the lead 3.

My first trip to Outlaw. Was VERY impressed with the facility. Lots of neat things about it - especially the Air Conditioned restrooms and BAR - yes - BAR. That was on the first level. There was 2nd and 3rd level of suites in that building as well. Good catch fence all the way around it - pit area looked very spacious.

They even had MUD BOG TRUCK races in the infield. They fashioned a small drag strip of mud and had these run in between heats - not much organization to it - but hey it was something I guess.

The only downside was the dust. OMS appears to have the sime kind of dirt/racing surface that Mid America does (S. Coffeyville). I call it peanut butter dirt but thats just my amatuer generalization of it. They got the stuff as wet as they could to keep the dust down in the heats. It just delayed the inevitable. But in the end - it doesn't make much sense for a dirt track fan to bitch about goin to a dirt track race and eatin a lil bit of that dirt track. It truly is part of it much of the time - the only thing that really matters is it was really good racing. They run quite an array of stock classes - but their pure stock and hobby stock features (i'm guessin thats what they were lol) were really good. 3 and 4 wide racing for much of the way. The sprints were pretty good. Many drivers appeared to be experimenting even in the latter stages of the race - sometimes low in this corner - high side the next time around. And that was pretty cool to see. There were quite a few sliders and they never had bad endings - and were fun to watch. Safety glasses and goggles came in handy - otherwise I probably would have missed some of the good racin' tryin to dig the dirt out my eyes wink Danny Smith methodically gained on leader Matt Sherrell - and challenged for that spot for much of the race - sometimes closer sometimes further. Smith got underneath and ahead of Sherrell comin out of a turn 2 that appeared to present every class with gremlins - but Sherrell slyly slipped back under and raced away for the win.

OMS had 2 modified classes. 1 of em being a regular modified class i presume - the other was called 360 modifieds. They were pretty good. A car numbered 327 won BOTH the hobby stock and 360 mod feature back to back. Neither of em easy either - he drove the wheels off the 360 mod especially. The Pure stock, hobby stock, and 360 mod features all ran before the sprints - and each was very good. The Pure Stock feature was won by a 14 year old - and it was his 3rd in a row according to OMS patrons and track announcer (very sorry I dont remember his name). There was a driver there with the last name GOODNIGHT - and he had some kickass shirts. With a nickname of Night Shift Goodnight - that just sounds bound for greatness or infamy. Definitely to be remembered either way lol.

The flagman puzzled me all night. throwing yellows for cars that just got squirrly and then throwing reds for those that actually spun out. I thought I had I knew what a phantom yellow was but after tonight I'm not even so sure about that anymore lol. I kept wandering if maybe a caution or 2 was thrown for a car spun out on Highway 69 lol. I don't want to overstep my bounds here - but I couldn't help but wander about that. I'll just chalk it up to maybe they do their own thing there - not a lesser thing mind you - just their own way of doing things.

There was near 20 in every class - not sure about the front wheel drive though. They just ran a feature and we enjoyed AC and a snack during it lol. The only class that looked less than near 20 was the main modified class (not the 360 mods). I think they had 2 heats of 6 or so. That was the feature yet to run after the sprints - which we left at the conclusion of. We left the track at 11pm sharp. Which for all they had - and from what others have said about their tendency to run into the wee hours - seemed like a success. I called OMS - i think it was wed. to ask a few questions bout admission price and what all was runnin - not sure if it was the promoter who answered the phone - but whoever it was a hell of a guy. He said his name was Lynn (not sure on that spelling). Not only extremely helpful with my questions but very detailed and informative. And seemed genuinely happy to be answering them and that we were comin' out for a first time. hell of a guy Smile

At the end of my first visit to OMS - I like it. The dust really sucked - actually the stifling heat with absolutely no wind was the bad kicker of the night (again, part of it - and better than pouring down rain) - but I really liked the facility and the racing was great. They play interesting music between races too - and somehow they don't over do it (most do lol). They bring previous week's winner not just on the front straight - but actually INTO THE STANDS - while playing Rocky music - and then playing WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS when they drive off. which in some strange way is kind of cool - especially cool for those drivers that earned their spot there. They spent like 20 minutes interviewing those winners - which I remember thinkin was really cool except for the excessive heat without a breeze, which didn't matter because hey it wasn't like it was going anywhere - but anyways it was cool of the track to spend a lil more time to reward those drivers - actually the went far to all night - the announcing was good with lineups before every race and the occasional wise crack. They even stopped the 360 mod feature on the track - drivers in their car and stood in front of every car with a checkered flag and damn near screamed the driver's name and hometown out very enthusiastically. I giggled when the announcer whooped "WIN IT OR WEAR IT - ZERO OR HERO - HERE THEY COME!!!!" - he said this very emphatically damn near screaming at the top of his lungs and in barely over 1 full second. It was almost impressive lol. It was entertaining.

I just can't help but mention it - the scenery at OMS was simply OUTSTANDING ( if you catch my drift lol). The track would never have to search for trophy queens thats for sure lol.

Since they run fridays not sure when my next visit would be there - maybe the OCRS Harold Leep Memorial race in September, but I will probably look at the forecast first to see which way the wind is blowing lol. I feel I got my 10$ worth and then some. Had a fun time - met a couple cool folks - even a couple fellas from OKC that like us were there for a first time. And after that first time - I liked it. Lots of cool lil promotions and different lil things that were pretty neat. They must have shot 50 shirts up in the stands throughout the night.

I'm sure better (and complete) results for the nights racing could be found with a few quick clicks - this is just a sort of review of my first trip to Outlaw Motor Speedway. I enjoyed it.

I agree with almost everything you said. It was my first trip as well. Altough i stayed in the pits most of the time. only thing that really peeved me is how long they took to line up after a yellow/ red or both flag. over all very impressed with track people facility and food nice job outlaw motor speedway.
