Do you still have the picture of Steve & Sammy? It is the one of them looks like they maybe on afront straightway? It is an awesome picture. I once owned it, till a renter we had decided to STEAL it!! The one we bought from you was the (I think) 18 x 24. Could you tell me what it would cost for me to replace that pic? I know it was one of the bigger size pics, cause I had to buy a poster size frame for it! Thank-You for your help on this matter!!

You rang?

I sent you an email with the info. Thanks to all who bought that shot over the dozen years I sold it, somewhere around 5,300 enlargements in total. Ironically, I don't have anything larger than an 11 x 14 of that shot but there's over a thousand of you who do, dang. A special thanks to Steve and Sammy as well for their part, lol. Take It Easy...

Hey Mike...

Did you sell out of all your gear? Or do you still have stuff sitting around? An up and coming photog wants to know. wink

Oh...and for those of you who have not seen the now famous Sammy/Steve wheels up shot at Beaver Dam, it's no doubt a sprint car "photog" hall of fame shot!

It was sent on June 2 at 10:33 am and Re-Sent 5 minutes ago, email me if you are still having problems.

Mr. Weatherman, how in the health are ya'? I sold most of my stuff, gave the rest away and actually still have some Norman equipment for IBRACN that I hope to give to one of the Outlaw drivers to give to him when they are up here in Canada next month. Heck, I even sold my negs, got a nice price from a collector in IA, kept a few duplicates (Steve & Sammy being one and the rest is mostly Earnhardts last race). Toledo is not too far from Brantford ON, come on up for the Outlaw shows, it's a great place to watch a race. Take It Easy...

Doing well sir...doing well.

I'm still on Nikon gear...and am actually in the market for a flash with more punch. I'm not sure that Norman equip will work with my current body (D80), and my 600 Speedlight just doesn't have enough punch. I know others that are having success with SB800/900 Speedlights...so that might be an option. I have a Sunpak 622 Pro...but they don't make a hot shoe adapter for the Nikon iTTL bodies. (Serious bummer).

I did move into some new glass this year...and my results so far have been mixed...but I'm slowly getting it figured out. Here is a link:

Thanks Mike for answering the questions of a true Nube several years ago. It was certainly appreciated.

I hear Ontario is nice in the summertime. Smile

As always...Take Er Easy.

The three most important words in Photography, light, light and light. Norman's were the answer back in my day but there may be alternatives in today's game, not sure.

Heck, you're close enough to Ontario, a few miles as the crow flies, you oughta know. Not quite like when we first met in Denver at that sleazy bar, my bad, lol. Good luck, Highlights at 11, Take It Easy...

Amen to the light comment.  Faster glass certainly helps too!

No offense to anyone on the board...but I'm a big fan of going "au natural" with light until you can no longer squeeze off a decent shot.  Always seems funny to see flashes going off with a full sun at your back.  Can look a bit unnatural sometimes.  I guess some people just have to be able to see the floor pan...Idunno.

Maybe I'm just jealous since I don't have a big Norman or Metz that can burn the nose hairs off of a Rhino at 60 paces.  Smile  But getting a good, clean, crispy shot that conveys speed and power under natural lighting conditions is the pinnacle for me.

And for the record...that sleazy bar is no longer there...but that part of the Denver Metro is not lacking many others to take it's place.

Too bad the lone dirt track for Denver is history.  Maybe when Penske finally builds his new speedway out there we'll get a new one.  (sigh).

Norm, I think I was at the last race (W of O's) for that track, late one year on the way back from CA. I have a history of being in sleazy bars that close but generally just for that one night, lol.

You do what you want with the photo deal, everyone has their own 'style' and money isn't the answer, at all. Available light produces some wonderful shots and a flash with decent light can also do the same. To each his own, do your own thing is a throwback from my generation that's as relevant today in photography as it was in the good ol' hippie days of the 60's. Peace, lol, Take It Easy....

If I remember right that Steve and Sammy double wheelie shot was from an early May afternoon race at Beaver Dam that was delayed several hours due to morning rain and frost that was still coming out of the track. If it is the race I am thinking of Steve ended up running through the frost heave in the fast dash and flipped hard enough to break his collarbone. Of course they repaired the car and he ran well in the feature....not telling anyone about his injury until several months later.

Abnormal...tell me more about that sleazy bar in Denver...I am living in Idledale (4 miles west of the Red Rocks Ampitheater) and missing dirt track racing in the worst way! Currently unemployed so a road trip is too expensive, but what about I76....is it as bad as some say it is?

For the record, Mike sold his negatives to stock car flagman and photo collector Doug Haack. His stuff can be found and purchased through www.vintageracingphotos.net/

Jim, nice to see you around!

You are right about that shot, it was a friggin' cold afternoon and it almost drizzled all day long. Steve and Sammy raced each other hard and did slide jobs for a bunch of laps before Sammy came out on top (2nd to Dave Blaney). The amazing thing I'll never forget that day was watching Steve get out of the car slowly and in pain and Sammy walk over and shake hands with him, it was the only time I ever saw that happen in the hundreds and hundreds of Outlaw races I covered. I always thought it was a welcome back handshake as it was the year that Steve came back from NASCAR and it was about 4 or 5 races in. They had genuine smiles which showed the tremendous respect that each man has for the other. In spite of what both men have said and their actions I think both drivers appreciate the other way more than we'll ever know, that day I saw it up close. Take It Easy....

Wow...it's one of those deals where I could drive right up to the front door of the bar...but for the life of me I can't remember the name of it!

Southern limits of Commerce City (which should tell you something right there) near a hotel.

Never made it out to I-76.  I heard it's a decent racetrack...but he facilites leave a lot to be desired.  Drove by a couple of times out chasing storms, but never had time to stop and take a look up close.

Jetmore, KS and Hollywood Hills down in ABQ are roughly 5 1/2 hour drives from Denver.  Both are excellent tracks.  I know there are other tracks in CO but I've never been to or even seen them in person.

My enduring memory from that day (besides the whoop-de-doo coming off turn 4 which aided greatly in your shot) was Steve getting out of the car, stewing and stomping around on top of the trailer while the crew made repairs. My girlfriend at the time couldn't understand why he was so upset at himself given the track conditions until I pointed out that it was probably a pride thing....his father was there that day.

Commerce City tells me enough! It doesn't bother me to have a few drinks in the dives in Golden or on Broadway, but Commerce City is as whacked out as Boulder but in a bad way.

I believe that Hollywood Hills is now closed, I am going to try and find a way back to Knoxville or maybe hop on the motorcycle towards Belleville later this year. I will probably catch an asphalt show up in Erie but for now driving past Bandimere (I tried working there last year....not even close to satisfying the urge) is the closest I will get to a track.

Hmmm, a little early with the trash talk Sir, wouldn't you agree? I just hope you have a PVR coz' I know you were at Knoxville last night. Even moreso, I hope you watch the game and see some of the stuff I've been talking about. The Pengirls played like the 5th place team they were for lots of the season. They do have two stars, but they are still babies and they don't have a goaltender good enough to win the Cup, yet they still can. Heck, take either one of the babies out of the series as Datsyuk has been and it's already over. The Red Wings are so much the better team, the smarter team and the more polished it's a crime they can still lose, technically. When my Flyers won their first Stanley Cup beating Bobby Orr and the big bad Bruins they weren't the best team either so anything can still happen. Take some solace in that and then, of course, Take It Easy....
