Against my better judgement as I watched the weather closely, I headed to Lawton Speedway for the Cyclone 50 Saturday night. Forty modified showed up (24 sport mods/16 champ sprints) with Randy Timms, Stanley Reed Jr., Travis Penrod, Gene Weaver, Alan Sharpensteen just a few of the names that were on hand. The factory stocks and mini stocks got their heat races in and two of the three champ sprint heats before it started to rain. Seeing the lightning and rain coming from the EAST, I headed for my car and called Chris Smith and my wife for the quickest directions to Ardmore.

I then made a decision and decided to head to Ardmore at 9:08 PM. I then called Randy Thomas who informed me that they were doing trophy presentations at Elk City and no way would be able to make the features. I then called Stanley and asked him to call me if they rained out at Lawton so I would know I made the right decision. Not knowing if he would answer his phone, I then called Brian Wolfe (factory stock winner at Ardmore Saturday night) and he informed that it had rained and they were in a rain delay. I then took a chance and called Ronnie Gould and he said they wouldn't start racing again (heats were finished) for thirty mintues.

My wife told me it was only an hour and thirty minutes from Lawton to Ardmore (wrong) and when I got through Duncan, Stanley called and said they officially rained out (makeup July 4th).

I kept driving and driving when I finally got to Ardmore about 11:05, TWO HOURS after I left Lawton. I got there just in time to sit with dogwater and Mrs. dogwater and watch the sport mod "A" feature (ran flag to flag, no cautions) and the caution filled modified "A" feature.

I am now home and with the help of the above mentioned people, I got to see races at two different tracks, two hours apart.

Sounds like you had quite the road trip to me! I have seen several drivers do this sort of thing before. Especially those who chase state, regional and national points in some race sanctioning bodies. For a fan to do it is something as being a bit un-usual. This just goes to show the love you have for dirt track racing David. I admire it. I share in that love of the sport. Here is one of my stories.

I once drive the 3 hour drive to Abilene Texas from my home in north Texas. We no more than drove into the pit area and the rains came and washed out the show. It was still early in the day. But all shows for miles from Abilene Texas was rained out. The closest show still going on was in Eunice New Mexico. About another 2 1/2 - 3 hours away. Off we went and made it in time for the 2nd heat race of the show with the entire remaing show yet to run. It was a great show at a great track. It made the 6 1/2 hour drive back home well worth it all.

David's experience and mine are just a few examples of what some fans will do. I personnally know of many fan's that have done road trips like David's and mine..... all just to see the grass roots racers in action at a bull ring clay oval track.
