Alissa Geving in the #3x won the Petaluma 360 winged sprint car event at Petaluma Speedway Staurday night. The results at the time of my leaving the pits were still showed unofficial on the pit board. During a lap 22 yellow flag Geving drove off the track and into the pit area just after the leader at the time #5v Bradley Terrel was being show a black flag for a flat left rear and left for the pits.. Geving running 2nd at the time to Terrel was given the #1 spor (upon her return to the track) for the restart and went on to win the A Feature. There was some contention that by leaving the track surface and entering the pits Geving should only be allowed to start at the rear of the field behind the last car on the lead lap.

15 cars - weather was BRRRRRR - cold - surprise entry of the night #63 Ivan Worden. No -show #35 Rickey Wright - Wright was running the GSC race at Watsonville.

Fast Time : #2b, Jermey Burt, 12.83 - Burt was the only car in the 12 second bracket as the track was on the dry side for qualifications. Track was re-worked before the sprint heats allwoing for some moisture to come up and a heavier surface.

Heat 1 - finish, car#, name (where started) - 7 cars, 8 laps

1. #3, Adrein Betournay (2) 2. #2b, Burt (6) 3. #6c, Jeff Parady (4) 4. #10x, Roberto Kirby (3) 5. #7, Jake Haulot (5) 6. #63, Worden (7) 7. #9n, Nick RIngo, Jr. (1) - Betournay grabbed the lead with an inside move in turn 2 on the opening circuit. Kirby and Burt quickly followed the red #3 by passing Ringo, Jr heading down the backstretch. Burt grabs 2nd from Kirby with a low move in turn 2 on lap 2. Betournay stretches the lead out to 10 car lengths by lap 3. Parady grabs 4th on lap as Ringo, Jr faded to the rear. Last 4 laps saw no other changes.

Heat 2 - finish, car #, name (where started) 8 cars - 8 laps

1. #56, Shawn Arriaga (6) 2. #19, Art McCarthy (1) 3. #5v, Bradley Terrel (2) 4. #3x, Geving (3) 5. #10c, Keith Collins (7) 6. #10, Michael Forsland (8) 7. #51, John Kirby, Jr. (5) 8. #48, Kirk Simpson (4-DNF) - Arriaga the class of this heat as he takes the win from 6th starting. At the drop of the green McCarthy grabs the lead followed by Geving and Terrel. Arriaga moves into 4th with an outside turn 2 pass, lap 2 on the #48 of Simpson. Simpson would pull off a few laps later with a mechanical problem. Lap 3 and Geving goes wide in turn 4 and allows both Terrel and Arriaga to zoom by on the low side. Arriaga now pressuring Terrel for 2nd as McCarthy leads. Lap 7 and Arriaga blasts under Terrel low in turn 2 and then catches McCarthy down the backstretch and swoops low in turn 3 to take the lead. Arriaga pulls away on the last lap to take the checkered flag and the convincing win.

A-Main - 25 laps - finish, Car#, Name (where started) - up against curfew as a medical issue in the grandstands earlier in the night required Petaluma firefighters/paramedics to respond. Several red flags in the wingless race have also eaten up alot of time. The #48 of Simpson did not make the call for the main event.

1. #3x, Geving (3) 2. #3, Betournay (7) 3. #10x, Kirby (5) 4. #6c, Parady (4) 5. #5v, Terrel (8) 6. #7, Hailot (12) 7. #9n, Ringo, Jr. (9) 8. #10c, Collins (11) 9. #63, Worden (13) 10. #51, KIrby, Jr. (10) 11. #2b, Burt (1-DNF) 12. #10, Forsland (14-DNF) 13. #56, Arriaga (2-DNF) 14. #19, McCarthy (6-DNF) - Burt blasted to the intial lead followed by Arriaga and Geving. McCarthy begins to fall back and brings out a quick red flag with a wild flip in turn 4 on lap 1. McCarthy is OK - Complete restart. Burt again rolls out to a healthy lead on the start. Terrel is on the move as he drives the #5v to 4th by the end of lap 1. Terrel grabs 3rd from Geving on lap 4 with an outside turn 2 pass. Lap 5 and Burt is now beginning to naviagte lapped traffic. Arriaga begins to close the gap. Lap 7 and Arriaga drives it hard into turn 3 and bangs wheels with Worden. Arriaga does a quick 360 in turn 4 and somehow keeps it going and keep the 2nd spot. Arriaga roars down the frontstretch, but slows past the flagstand as the front axel crumples. Arriaga is off on the hook. Lap 6 Restsart - 2b,5v,3x,6c,3,10x,9n,7,10,10c, 51,63 - Burt jumps out to the lead again. Burt does a couple of wheelstands down the backstretch and begins to have handling problems. Terrel quickly closes up behind. Lap 16 - Terrel takes the lead from the ill handling Burt with a low move coming out of turn 2. Lap 23 and Burt's front end finally gives in and he flips in trun 4. He is OK. For some reason (past curfew?) the track decides to only throw a yellow and cars circle the infield in 3 and 4 while the #2b is taken of. While waiting for the restart Terrel has a flat left rear and is balck flagged. Geving also goes off. Geving allowed to keep position #1 upon return to the track. Terrel returns with a new left rear. Lap 22 restsrt- 3x, 3, 10x, 6c, 5v, 7, 10c, 9n, 51, 63, 10 - at the drop of the green Geving takes it home the final 3 laps as no much changes over the final 4 laps.

Hard Charger - #3 Betournay 7th to 2nd

Burt looked very good and was poised to win the race until handling woes eventually ended his night. It could be the wheel stands finally wore out the front end.

Nest race for 360 winged sprinters is May 9

Teenager Ryan Bernal in the #87 won the wingless sprints race over a solid 23 car field - shortened to 15 laps by time. Several lengthy red flags and late starting A features were the culprit. It was really too bad as the wingless sprints brought the highest car count of any class to the track tonight.

i don't think there is normaly any "contention" about having to start at the back after leaving the track and then returning. it is normaly agreed upon.

to indy and beyond!!

I don't recall ever seeing someone leave the racing surface for the pit area and receive their spot back...........I'd sure like to see their rulebook on that one.

Maybe Petaluma better read their own rule book. In it it states, rule 16.11 Cars that have gone to the pits must start at the rear of the line up. Drivers not obeying this rule will be penalized!

I guess they have different rules for different drivers.

According to the official race recap in the following link, the confusion resulted from an erroneous black flag (which was supposed to be only for Terrell's car due to the tire trouble) by the officials during the yellow after Burt's flip...then they took about 10 laps more of yellow before restarting.

From the race report...

As the field approached the Turn 1 exit a trackside official erroneously pointed Terrell and Geving towards it. Both cars left but Geving quickly returned when it was revealed she was blameless. When the race restarted the 17-year-old Ursuline High School honor student held off Adrien Betournay over the final laps to capture her fifth career feature win and first of the season at Petaluma Speedway.

one little quirk that is not being told is petaluma requires the raceiver radios as per the rules,if you see the black flag wait til they call out your number on the radio.

outstanding call...

I'm the head scorer/2nd announcer in the booth and this is what I saw(besides the guy yelling at me for announcing the NASCAR results since he didn't want to know):

The leaders were DEEP into lappers and the yellow came out at just the wrong time. I'm separating lappers and leaders (INHALE: when you stop scoring or throw a yellow, you have to back up to the previous scored lap, which is easy enough except when you throw it right in the middle of the lap. Cars that have just been lapped need to be credited with another lap since they were just lapped during the lap that no longer counts if that makes sense to make sure they're on the right lap when you go green again EXHALE) While I'm doing this, I look up just as the 5v and 3x are leaving, so I mention it over the PA (the two leaders just went to the pits). The 3x came back and got her spot back and it was breaking loose in Tulsa (pro wrestling reference):

Steward: "Who black flagged the 3x?"

Cornerman: "I pointed and the 5 and 3 both left."

Steward to flagman: "Did you black flag the 3x?"

Flagman: "No. Only the 5v, but the 3x might've thought it was for her."

Steward: "Get the 3x back on the track. No one black flagged her."

And then she came back. She did a pass-thru never breaking stride in the pits. I think Harlan Osborne in the recap on the website states it rather well.

What several are missing here is the Alissa did what she thought that the flagman wanted her to do - she thought the black flag was for her, so she left the track.

How many times have we seen drivers ignore black flags, and drag out the show by refusing to acknowledge the flag?

And Moose, while she did not wait for a raceiver call to tell her she recieved a black flag, it obviously worked to get her back on the track without stopping in the pits......and back to her correct position...

Just guessing, did your car finish behind Alissa? Smile

Moose was hangin with us in pvll Saturday. He's a good wrench but getting a raceiver to get that kind of reception is something even he can't tackle.

i guess my point is why require them if not gonna use properly, kinda like the split yellow while we are useing transponders.

it is things that happen and then we move on to the next race hopefully learning and getting better so as to provide a great show for those in the stands.

my final point of this was not blaming the 3x car, only pointing out if we must run the radios then use them to keep controversy like this from happening.

now chuck i would not post solely because another car finished in front of mine,i got more class than that chuck as you already know my friend.

lets all look forward to this weekend and remembering al hinds, see you at the hill this weekend.
