Beaver Drill & Tool Company had 2 cars, that were identical except one was 12 & the other 12X. They were the color blue that the radius rods are in the pictures. they are located on Mission Rd in Kansas City, KS. I don't have any pictures of them but they were very noticable & nice looking cars. Curt (CG5KC) may have some pictures of them. ....Luther

Luther, you are right about the old Beaver Tool team out of Shawnee, KS.....lots of good stories and memories of driving for Bob and Billy V, Springer was our mech most of the time when we worked out of the shop at Quivera and Johnson Dr. Bob built a really nice shop in Johnson County, it was out in the country but they have built out to him now.

Runnin OKC on Fri nights and NCRA's in the Suchy Gambler and headin to KC to work on the car and get it to Knoxville in time for hot laps was always a challenge, but almost winning the track championship again in 85 made it worth it.....

And John, very cool model, looks like it is gonna be asa nice as the Gambler Champ car you just completed.....Shane

Shane,...Nice picture. The paint job on their cars always looked nice, especially the wings. I lived in Olathe (was Postmaster there 1980-98) ran the pits for Greg Weld at I-70 in 84. I know who you are but did not realize you were driving that long ago. That was a busy week end of travel, to say the least. Am I correct, your father Bud Carson ran the OKC track?...Luther

Luthar, that is correct, Bud was my dad that ran the OKC Fairgrounds Speedway track under the Mar-Car Inc. promotion company banner from the 50's off and on till he passed away in 1991,

1984 we ran I-70 quite a bit for the big shows....I was running for Richard Tharp in the red #51 Rio Airways J&J car, he was an x-drag race top fuel champion turned sprint car owner with his Blue Max buddy Raymond Beadle, he owned the Sammy Swindell Old Milwaukee car back then.....

Shane, I was at I-70 for every show during the 84 season. I know who Raymond Beadle is and that he owned Sammy's car sponsored by Old Miwaukee. He also owned Rusty Wallace's Kodiac car in NASCAR. We also had Kenny Schrader run a couple of late model shows at I-70 that year in the "Carolina Ford" dirt car. That was the year before he went NASCAR.

I took a ride along in the "Petty Ride Along" program here in Daytona a few years back. The driver started a conversation about speed & was I comfortable. That led to sprint cars. He asked me if I knew you. I told him I knew who you was but never met you. He said you were driving for the "Petty Ride Along" program in their western division. Talked like he knew you well.

Nice picture taken at Knoxville, turns 1 & 2.........Luther

Ray,

I remember that race very well in AR, we had won the night before in Tulsa with the 6cly mod and Mike Peters and Norman Gumm talked me into goin over there to race Sun afternoon...bad move for me, but Mike and I ran quite a bit at Dewey Fri nights against the v-8 cars and did pretty well.

After the Sat night win Mike Peters came up with a gallon jug with OJ and Vodka all mixed up so we all helped him drink it.....he was bad, but I was way worse...it was really hot and I was sick all day Sun, I had the Kid (Billy Newton) drive us all the way to the track, I was sick between every race and when I got to where I could race I got up to 2nd behind Mike in the A main and spun out with 2 to go.....

Billy is still around OKC, he was with me from then to the mid 80's and also worked with a lot of the sprint teams like Charley Swartz, Rick Ungar, Wolfgang and others.....

thanks for the reminder :-) Shane

This reminded me of a night that I had almost forgotten. I think it was in 1985 or 86 at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City. I was traveling for some reason and decided to stop in and catch the sprint cars that night and Shane was driving for Beaver Bob. I was still driving champ cars and trying to get going in the sprints. Shane knew I had been wanting to get started so when I walked up to his pit area he asked me if I wanted to drive the other Beaver Tool car. I couldn't believe it! I was ready to go except I didn't have my gear with me so I had to get creative. Tommie Estes had some extra stuff so between him and Shane I got a chance to run that night. I think it was an old trostle car and it was way faster than I was but I remeber doing pretty well until I ran through the holes too many times and tore the sump tank loose. Thanks Shane for giving me a break.

They ask about Shane everywhere!

Talked to Van May, he asked about Shane.

Talked to Mrs. Michnowicz(?) on the West coast, she asked about Shane.

It's happened more times than that but it's hard to remember them all.

Fringe benefit of the hobby there Warren. EACH new model works better with 'two' pizza plasticthingamajiggies. There is only one way to get them if you don't have a friend in the business.

John

Looks nice. Have to work up another pit scene for this one.

BTW, are you drilling the bolts on it? There are a couple of guys on here that can lend a hand, if you need it.

Does anyone have any pics of engines in a sprint car? I'm wanting to plumb the engine, radiator, etc.., but I can't find any detailed pics (radiator hose locations) for this, does anyone have anything?

I do remember that day at Lakeside Tony, that was a pretty tough track and you handled it like you had been running those type of tracks for years....we had some great races together, hope all is well, Shane

John,

ask and you shall receive, a very cool Wesmar engine pic I have used a few times for ads etc...unfortunatly I never got to run it :-( .

It is not totally conventional though, it is a BD headed version that JV Brotherton (Brodix Inc) and Bob Westphal was working on that Ted Johnson outlawed right away, for what ever reason.....it has the 2 center cylinder valves swapped and ports moved like a Ford....you should be able to get what you are looking for here....

Wow, between reading what Shane posts from the past and now my favorite champ dirt car driver at that time ("Tiger" Tony Armstrong as Jack Claxton named him) I really do need to go to the next old-timers get together here in the city. All the stories and the connections of drivers in their pasts are great reading.

When I worked for ASCS there were times when I would hitch a ride with Tommie Estes. Talking with him about his racing past and the stories are stuff I will always remember.

I can only imagine all the stories Shane has to tell.
