Mason Moore heads for Bill Brownell Memorial after 7th place finish in Placerville point opener
By Gary Thomas
Chico, CA – April 6, 2009…Following a 7th place finish in the Placerville Speedway 360 point opener on Saturday Princeton, CA's Mason Moore is geared up and ready for the second annual Bill Brownell Memorial at the Silver Dollar Speedway this Friday night.
This past weekend saw Moore kick off not only the Placerville point opener, but also the opening 410 point race at the Silver Dollar Speedway on Friday driving the family owned Rolling Hills Casino, Moore Insurance Services, NOS Energy Drink No. 22.
A very fast track was presented to competitors at the Feather Falls Casino opener and the 18 year-old started off the event by qualifying 17th fastest in the field, before finding his groove in the heat race to easily win the eight lap contest. In the main event Moore started from the seventh row inside and hung tough for the duration of the race and crossed under the checkered flag in the 10th position after 25 laps of action.
Saturday night saw Moore make the drive to the Placerville Speedway to compete aboard the Friends & Family Racing No. x1 in the first of 13 Red Hawk Casino 360 point races at the red-clay bullring.
A 24 car field was on hand at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds track and the driver known as "Primetime" qualified sixth quick overall and scored a fourth place result in his heat race. He then lined-up third in the feature and battled around the top five for much of the race, until the crossing the stripe in seventh at the checkered.
Bill Brownell Memorial defense this Friday-
This Friday night will find Moore heading into the prestigious $3,000 to win Bill Brownell Memorial at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. Last season saw the youngster lead all 25 laps at the event to pick up his first career sprint car victory. "It was really the perfect night to come out and win our first race last year," said Moore, who finished third in the final Chico point standings last season.
Last year's Brownell Memorial featured a stout 34 car field on hand at the quarter-mile bullring and it all began with Moore qualifying ninth fastest to start off the night. When the right pill was drawn for the inversion it put him on the pole of the main event and despite a tricky track that had developed, "Primetime" was able to hit his marks and hold off all challengers to score the huge win.
To make things even more special and impressive was the fact that the drivers who finished behind Moore in the top five at the Brownell Memorial last year included Stephen Allard, Brent Kaeding, Jonathan Allard and Andy Forsberg, all former Silver Dollar Speedway or Golden State Challenge Series champions.
When asked about the nerves of being out front with all the big names behind him, Moore commented that he had to block all of that out. "Even with all those guys behind me I just had to focus on running my own race and thankfully it worked out and we were able to come out on top. Hopefully we can come back this weekend and do it again to put this car in victory lane for the second year in a row," Moore concluded.
After Friday's event Moore will travel to the Petaluma Speedway on Saturday to kick off the California Sprint Car Civil War Series season. In September of last year the Princeton racer solidly drove to a fifth place finish in the Civil War main event at the 3/8 mile clay oval, which also marked his first night of driving the F&F Racing No. x1. This coming Saturday he'll look to start off the Civil War schedule with a strong run in the Steve Tuccelli/Alan Bradway owned A.R.T. Chassis sprinter.
