Brett Miller claims podium finish to open Feather Falls Casino 410 point season at Silver Dollar Speedway
By Gary Thomas
Chico, CA – April 5, 2009…Coming off a strong outing at the Silver Cup Race of Champions the previous weekend, 19 year-old sprint car driver Brett Miller kept up the momentum and raced to a podium finish during the opening round of the Feather Falls Casino championship season at the Silver Dollar Speedway on Friday night.
With strong winds during the day the Silver Dollar Speedway track preparation crew took all precautions necessary and soaked the quarter-mile clay oval with water making for a very fast and hooked-up surface as the night went on. A total of 28 entrants signed in for the opening Feather Falls Casino 410 Point Race on Friday night and Miller kicked-off the season by qualifying ninth fastest in the Care Free Pools, Platinum Powder Coating, Al's Concrete No. 1x.
He then started from the second row in his heat race and quickly charged into second, where he would run for the duration of the eighth lap contest to transfer into the main event. When the number eight pill was drawn for the inversion it put Miller on the outside of the front row in the 25 lap main event.
When the green lights flashed on Miller had a side by side drag race with pole sitter Jason York, but York was able to get the advantage off turn two. It was all for naught however, as the yellow flag waved for a stalled car to create a complete restart. When the green came back out York got on the gas a little early and the yellow lights proceeded to come back onto the speedway as officials deemed that he had jumped the start and set him back three rows.
During the yellow some confusion happened however, as Miller also dropped back to the fourth row despite the fact that the penalty was only on the pole sitter. Race officials didn't realize it though and allowed the race to restart, but fortunately for Miller another stoppage occurred on the next attempted green. Under the stoppage officials corrected the issue and the Wolfe Electric, Christopher Bean Coffee Co, 6-Feet Deep Clothing No. 1x was put back up to the front row.
Miller would settle into second when the action finally got underway and held the spot until two-time King of California Jonathan Allard was able to by. The 19 year-old driver would hold his own the rest of the way on the extremely fast surface and bring home a third place finish after 25 laps of competition. "It was a nice way to start the Chico point season and hopefully this will be the trend as the year goes on for this team," Miller said.
Next up for Miller will be this coming Friday's second annual Bill Brownell Memorial, which will mark the second point race in the Feather Falls Casino championship season at the Silver Dollar Speedway. The prestigious event will pay a nice $3,000 to the winner of the 410 sprint car main event.
Last season saw Miller qualify fifth fastest at the event, before finishing seventh in the feature after an early race spin. "We're looking forward to the Brownell Memorial this coming weekend," Miller commented. "It sure would be nice to get that $3,000 and it would be huge for our team if we could come out and end the night in victory lane."
