Bud Kaeding runs 10th in Golden State Challenge opener
By Gary Thomas
Placerville, CA – March 31, 2009…Following a 10th place finish in the season opening event for the Golden State Challenge King of California Series this past Saturday, former two-time Silver Crown champ Bud Kaeding will head for double-header outing this weekend.
This year saw the Golden State Challenge Series open up the season with a single night event at the always exciting Placerville Speedway red-clay bullring during this most recent Saturday.
Kaeding kicked-off the night by the being the first of three drivers during the evening to get into the 9-second bracket with his 9.923 good enough to place the Alviso Rock, Kaeding Performance, Swift Metal Finishing Maxim third quickest overall. He was then charging hard to try and make a pass for the transfer in his heat when a turn two excursion set him back in the running order, forcing him into the b-main.
The 12 lap semi saw Kaeding get the jump on the field and hold off a hard-charging Evan Suggs to pick up the win and transfer into the evening's main event. Lining-up tenth in the 30 lap contest the Campbell racer hung in the top 10 until smoke began emitting from the BK Motorsports No. 29 sprinter.
An oil fire then erupted on the 12th lap and Kaeding pulled to the outside of turn four as the red lights came on the speedway. The 29 year-old driver was then pushed to the pits to have the crew asses the problem and after finding it, he pushed back onto the track to rejoin the field. Starting the rear of the pack Kaeding was able to make it back up to 10th over the final 18 laps of the main event.
Ocean Speedway 360 opener & GSC at Antioch on deck-
Up next for Kaeding will be this Friday night's GLR Investments 360 Sprint Car Series season opener at the Ocean Speedway in Watsonville. Last year he drove to a pair of wins and a tie for fourth in the final Ocean Speedway 360 standings. Kaeding will take to the track Friday night for the first time in 2009 driving the Sala Racing, M&M Finishes, Weldway Construction No. 19 looking to start off the Watsonville season in victory lane.
On Saturday Kaeding will jump back behind the wheel of the BK Motorsports, High Five Pizza, MDR Machine No. 29 as the Golden State Challenge Sprint Car Series heads next for the Antioch Speedway. Last year the veteran driver scored a pair of fifth place finishes in the two events at the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds facility.
In the off-season however, the track was lengthened and reconfigured with more banking added, which is sure to make for increased speeds at the now listed 3/8 mile clay oval. "We're all excited to see how the track looks this season," said Kaeding, who won a Northern Auto Racing Club main event at the Antioch Speedway during his rookie year in 1997.
The front gate will open at 5pm this Saturday night in Antioch with qualifying set for 7. Adult tickets will be $16 while kids 6-12 and seniors will be $10. An early arrival is recommended as all seating is general admission and the Antioch grandstand tends to fill to capacity when the Golden State Challenge Series is in town.
