|
I have a schroeder manual steering gear that is right handed. What do I need to change it to left handed steering? Would anyone have the used necessary parts?

RRC why try to change what you have, it's a classic. The Schroeder "right hand" gear box works well. It does'nt take much to make it work on any car.
Schroeder right hand steer car. Cae Chassis.

I'll put it this way, if I had a right hander box I'd use it or set it back. Them's rare!

Thanks for the tip Brian.This old box has had the output shaft and case changed in length and its perfect for a old Trevis car I have. Only i just can't turn it over as was once suggested because the steering wheel would end up in a different area.....lol Also, I once thought the right hand steer was primarily for pavement. What really is the difference?

RRC, I always thought the Floyd Trevis cars were some of the best. They won a lot of races in USAC, IMCA & Penn area. Is the frame made of smaller tubing than 1 1/2 in OD ? I never measured one but they looked like 1 3/8 OD ? All of them I saw had the front torsion arms shakled to the front axle rather that riding flat on the axle. I always thought if I bought a frame rather than build, I would prefer a Travis. ....Luther

Luther, the tubing is 1 3/8 and indeed when you first look at it, does appear small. Our 1970 Trevis had the shackeled torsions,front and rear, but as a few years went by, eventually they also just rode on top of the front axle.Nice cars though...

I'd leave those arms unshackled on front. Seems that setup caused a bind that made a car more unpredictable. From the looks of the timelines and what I've come upon, riding the arms on top of the axle freed up the axle which allowed the car to corner faster and led to the shortage of springer front cars over the years.
