FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Elk City, Oklahoma - March 21, 2009 - Gene Weaver of Amarillo, Texas took control near the races midway point and never looked back to win the caution plagued O'Reilly/ NCRA Oklahoma modified inaugural event at Elk Citys I-40 Speedway in Elk City, Oklahoma on Saturday night. The event was the first ever sanctioned event for the West Oklahoma dirt track and the first race in the new NCRA Oklahoma modified division.
Enid, Oklahoma's Kip Hughes and Casey McClaskey of Ponca City started on the front row for the twenty-five lap Cherokee Casino-Resort feature finale with McClaskey taking the lead as the green flag fell. Hughes and Weaver battled the leader for the top spot after lap one before Weaver got around Hughes one lap later for the runner up position. The the first caution would quickly wave moments later when Alan Oliva came to a stop on the front stretch.
The restart saw McClaskey lead the field down the front stretch followed by Weaver, Hughes and Bobby Smith, Jr., who had quickly moved his way up from his twelfth place starting position. Smith was not done with his fourth position as he quickly disposed of Hughes and Weaver to take over the second spot before the next caution would come out on lap four for Greg Burts stop in turn two.
When racing action resumed, Weaver retook the runner up position and began to set his sights on the leader while Hughes and Smith battled for the third spot. Sixteenth starting Thomas Nunley of Marlow began making his way towards the front and making his presence felt, taking over the third position on lap five.
But back up front the battle for the top spot was heating up as Weaver and his Yeoman powered D&M chassis began pressuring the leader on lap seven. Weaver tried several pass attempts at the leader but could not make a clean pass to take the lead. On lap ten it would all change as McClaskey, who was running the top of the three-eights mile clay oval, bobbled enough to allow Weaver to drive underneath him exiting turn two to take the lead. It would be short lived, however, as McClaskey would retake the lead one lap later with his own move down low coming out of turn two.
When racing resumed after a caution to bunch up the field on lap eleven, Nunley made it a three car battle for the lead as McClaskey and Weaver continued to battle for the top spot. Lap thirteen saw Weaver get a run on McClaskey down low in turns three and four and with a little bobble from the leader, Weaver took the lead with ease.
Once out front, Weaver was never seriously challenged the rest of the distance, surviving several cautions in the final laps to pick up the Cherokee Casino-Resort feature victory. Hughes, who exited the track on lap four to change a flat tire, worked his way up during the waning moments of the race, took over the runner up position with two laps to go from McClaskey to finish second. Micky Lassiter finished fourth while Chris Roach, driving the Candlewood Automotive sponsored GRT chassis, came from his nineteenth starting position to round out the top five.
The eight lap heat races for the forty-three car field were won by Logan Cabbell, Burt, McClaskey, Hughes and Weaver. Pat McVicker took the ten lap "B" feature honors while Mustangs Shawn Jorski topped the twelve lap "B" feature. Jorski worked his way up from his thirteen starting position to take the victory and a eleventh place starting position in the Cherokee Casino-Resort feature. However, on the cool down lap following the race, Jorski lost an engine ending his evening.
The next stop for the NCRA Oklahoma modified division will be at Brill Motor Speedway in Meeker, Oklahoma on Wednesday night, April 8.
The O'Reilly/National Championship Racing Association would like to thank the following for their support for the 2009 race season:

He received 100 show up points, as did those other drivers who ran the McCreary tires instead of the NCRA legal Hoosier tires. Per NCRA rules.

David,

I added some of the points myself and it looks like most of them are wrong per NCRA rules page. Can you take a look at it.

For example I have #14 at 282pts #4 at 278pts #85 at 264pts #2X at 260pts #09 254pts, #5 243 pts, #06 273 pts. and so on.

Tilly (proud to see you and make the feature by the way), I know they changed the point structure during this winter for all divisions and the one that is on the website on the rules is different than the one NCRA webmaster John Rittenoure has. I will ask him to make sure he changes the point structure on the rules page of the website asap.

Thank you for the headsup.

David,

Not a good thing to post 2009 rules and point system then change it after the first race. Then make it retroactive. Dosen't send a good message.

How did Shawn Jorski only get 100pts. He won the B-main.

I think the NCRA guys done a great job as well. The track was really rough but that can be expected on the first night. The fan and car turnout was alot better than the Elk City could have imagined. I look forward to the rest of the races.

It was nice to talk to C-Ray today about the points and he listened. When we were getting off the phone he told me he didn't know if the points posted were right or wrong but he said I could be sure what ever they were supposed to be according to the rules is what they would be. I like that type of a stand up guy. I am looking forward to the rest of the year. The NCRA guys act like they appericiate the drivers and owners showing up to race and want to treat everyone fair... That is a stark contrast to a few other plases in OK.

Thanks NCRA and staff.

I agree with you Tillison and I believe that as drivers and/or owners and/or pitcrew that we should support the ones who treat us right!!!!! We shouldnt support any track that doesnt put the car owners/drivers and fans first.... Why should we be their STIMULUS PACKAGE?????

Lets get all the drivers to come as one, its already been shown that the promoters will not come together, and then you will see some promoters catch some "get right" in the way they treat the ones who support their life styles!!!!

Thanks for the results. It was a pretty good show. Nice to see the large field of cars also. I wonder how some of the drivers felt though since the track conditions pretty much sucked, but they tried to fix the problem. They had a lot of cars run on the track too though. It good for being the first race of the year for me. Now I am ready to go back to the races, but I have to wait a couple of weeks. Which really sucks! LOL!LETS GO RACIN!!
