I heard from a very reliable source that Manzanita Speedway will close at the end of the month. The property has been sold to make way for some sort of commercial development. I was hoping this was just a rumor since there has not been an official announcement, but the person relaying this information is a current employee and was notified yesterday of the sale.

Does anyone know how to get ahold of Bobby Martin, or R.J. Johnson? I'm sure they would be able to shed some light on this matter!

Hate to say it, but it may be true. Just received a note from an official with a racing organization (not Manzanita) indicating that it is true. Hope he is wrong.

Have received three phone calls regarding this within the last hour. All seem to indicate it is 100% true and the last night of racing will take place within the next month (date I am getting is April 11th). One story indicates a national chain store (huge in racing) will be constructed on the property.
None of this has appeared on the wire services yet so until then, keep your hopes up, but it does not sound good.

Looks like it's moving past the rumor stage.

I am BEYOND sick! I just MOVED here from Florida a year and a half ago to be near this place! If it wasn't for Manzy, I would have never even visited Arizona! I fully intended to have my ashes scattered on the track there when I kick off................. How could the Martins stoop so low as to pull this off without making ANY effort to make sure that it remained a speedway??

It was 1958 when I first fell in love with that track. I've had two major love affairs with race tracks and spent a great deal of time with both of them. First Ascot, now Manzy. I'll never fall in love again.

Ok, I'd like y'all to think about this: I'm sure that most of the people who read this board are racers or rabid hard core open wheel race fans like me. I kid you not, I MOVED 2200 miles across the country after living in Daytona Beach Fl for 35 years to be near Manzy and the best non winged open wheel racing in the country. I'm sure there will be a lot of sentiment from people wanting to attend the last races at this fabled facility and I will admit that was my first line of thinking. But then it occured to me that I would simply be putting MORE money in the pockets of the very person who betrayed the racing community by selling us out in this dirty underhanded manner, without even putting the place on the open market thus giving at least a chance for someone to buy the place and maintain it as a speedway. I understand economic neccesity as well as anyone in these tough times, I can see that maybe the Martin's got in over their heads and needed to sell, but someone PLEASE explain to me why it had to be done this way??? My line of thinking at this point is NOT TO SPEND ONE MORE DIME of my money that will go into these people's pockets! Why postpone the inevitable and in the process line the pockets of the very party that stuck the knife in your back? Seems to me that we ought to just walk away!

"national chain store (huge in racing)"
Doesn't sound like they give an "F" about racing if they are going to take another one of our rare treasures away. I hope this "huge chain store" goes out of business. Unfortunately that would still be to late. Just speculating... someone needs to talk with Jimmy Johnson or Joey Lagano. (haha)
Tony Stewart please help!!!

I can assure you the Martins were not in over their head.

Word now has it as a local crane, lift or trucking company. Whichever, it does not matter. The end result is the same.
As sad a day as this is for everyone – fans, drivers, crews, officials - I find it hard to knock the Martins. We have not walked in their shoes and as of now, we do not know what went on, why they sold or who else they may have tried to sell it to. They did not sell this piece of property for just $150.00. If we were in their shoes and somebody came up waving millions of dollars, we would all probably have to consider it. And, while I do not know Bobby's Dad, Bobby Martin is a good man and a decent human being whether he is promoting a racetrack or not.
Personally, when the new houses started to appear and the junkyard disappeared, I felt it was only a matter of time before the value of the land grew much more valuable than a racetrack could support. Sad indeed that this has happened, but it was inevitable. I actually thought it would have been gone before now. Hopefully, the loss of Manzy will beckon the dawn of a new track in the Phoenix area.

No where to point blame to exept for the fact that running a race track is not a very profitable deal.
Keep this in mind next time you decide to not support a race. It could very easily happen closer to home.
Word now has it as a local crane, lift or trucking company
Smiley Crane?? Now that would hurt!

Got this off another forum, don't know the validity!
its amazing what google and what 1 phone call can do
http://phoenix.gov/historic/faqs.html
if you want to save manzanita - the city of phoenix could step in
602-261-8699 - I spoke to a gentleman who used to go there as a kid and was dumbfounded to hear the track could be torn down
PASS THIS ALONG TO AS MANY PEOPLE YOU KNOW, GET THE WORD OUT
IT IS POSSIBLE YOU CAN SAVE THIS TRACK AND PRESERVE ITS FUTURE

Scott's correct. When the development began to take place, that was the beginning of the end for the track. Like myself, we all knew it. Maybe we didn't want to admit and/or think about it (as with myself), but it just seemed to be a matter of time. I was just hoping it would be 5-8 more years.
I knew the clock really began ticking when the Wal Mart to the south went up. Wal Mart doesn't go into a area thats just begun to start developing unless they have done some vigorous research. With Manzy at an intersection, my gut feeling when I saw Wally World was that intersection was going to be a hot piece of land.
Like so many of you, I share many memories @ Manzy and like with the closing of Ascot, this just makes my gut ache.
