Kings Speedway
By: Dan Harp

This Saturday night, March 14th, is the long awaited opening night at Kings speedway. Featured on this date are the West Coast Sprinters, Rebel sprints, IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Stock Cars. The WCS (West Coast Sprinters) are the non-winged 360 cubic in sprint cars that have raced at Kings for about 15 years. The Rebel Sprints are original racing division that was featured when Kings Speedway opened in the early ‘80’s. They both have rub under various names thru the years. Promoter Frank Dias brought back the very recognizable Rebel sprint name so that history can play a part in Kings racing. The non-winged cars were re-named to give a better indication of where these cars race the most. The IMCA classes are very popular throughout the US. The Modified class is the single most popular race car in America. They run under a very strict set of runes and have an engine claim rule, in that any driver in the top 5 positions on the lead lap at the end of the race can claim/purchase the engine of the winners engine for $1000. That levels the playing field considerably. The Stock class is fairly new and is gaining popularity largely due to the low cost of racing in that class. They too are governed by a strict set of rules.

As an extra feature, new to Kings Speedway, all fans will be able to venture into the pips between the hours of 2-4 pm to chat with the drivers and crews, take pictures and get up close and personal.

In the of season, the track was laser-leveled, with the entry and exits of all four turns greatly improved. The front and back straights are now actually slightly banked towards the infield to improve handling and safety. Approximately 100 loads of new clay was trucked in and spread and worked into the 3/8 mile track.

The entire pit area was also leveled and graded to allow for proper run-off if and when rain ever returns to Hanford.

All in all, Promoter Frank Dias has been very busy in the off season, primarily improving the track and pits to provide all drivers in all divisions a better PLACE TO RACE.

I dont understand how their name indicates where they race. For anyone not in the loop, this name could mean they run from Seattle to SanDiego.
