FREMONT, OH (2-21-09) by Bryan Autullo - F.A.S.T. Public Relations
The smell of hot chili filled the air at the Inaugural Racer's Chili Challenge, held at the fair grounds next to Fremont Speedway, as the crowd poured into the Flower Building throughout the afternoon to support local racing charities and the Fremont/Attica Sprint Title point fund. A little bit of nasty weather didn't keep too many people from coming to sample the 22 chili entries as the snow piled up outside. It was evident that the fans and drivers are getting anxious for the 2009 racing season to begin and seeing the BK Sears #20x car on display next to the newly unveiled F.A.S.T. show car had everyone longing for the roar of engines and the smell of methanol.
Celebrity judges Brad Doty, Kenny Jacobs, Jim Linder, and Darl Harrison made their laps around the chili pots with clip boards in hand taking notes to determine their favorites as the teams did their best to impress the judges with tasty chili and overall team presentation. The 3J Motorsports team won the 410 division as Colvin Racing took home the top prize in the 305 division. KCD Motorsports took the checkers in the Truck/Late Model division. WFIN's Racing World won the Fans/Media competition and also took home the "Chili Chief" award for the most votes overall by the judges. The Best Appearing Team award went to Top Gun Enterprises. The "People's Choice" award went to the 3J Motorsports team as they were voted the best overall chili by the general public. Extra special thanks go out to all the teams who participated in the Chili Challenge event.
There were several local drivers on hand throughout the day signing autographs and meeting fans of all ages. Host and emcee Brian Liskai, along with Scott Barman, spent the afternoon interviewing drivers and talking about their 2009 plans as many fans were introduced to these guys for the first time off the track. One of the goals of the F.A.S.T. organization is to bring racing charities into the public eye through interaction with the drivers and race teams who make it all possible. We'd like to thank all the drivers who participated in this event to help make it a success.
One of the highlights of the afternoon was the KS Sales & Service Hot Head Contest as six contestants downed as many Jalapeno peppers as they could eat in 5 minutes. The competition was "heated" and the minimum number of the flaming green death consumed was 9. Hot Shot Jason Tomczyk burned the competition by downing 15 and took home $50 in cash and a roll of toilet paper. The Computer Man, Inc. Rock-Paper-Scissors Tournament had 15 contestants trying their skills with 4 year old Sydney Shammo taking home the first place trophy. Cassidy Wilson was the runner up.
Greg Smith was the winner of the 50/50 drawing with proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish "Sprint forWishes" charity and pedal car raffle. In all, the Make-A-Wish crew collected over $250. Although Racers Racing for a Cure were not able to attend this event, $150 was set aside from the proceeds to be donated on behalf of the Chili Challenge committee for cancer research. The Texas Hold 'em Tournament was held to benefit the Hoserville Ohio charity for injured drivers and Todd Giteheff took home the loot. Through admissions, donations, and events throughout the day, Hoserville Ohio collected $700 and another $700 was donated to the F.A.S.T. point fund that will be distributed to drivers at the end of the season.
