Well when I was a kid in Hutchinson, there were a couple of service stations and you know, they had a race car.
Jimmy Mayes DX 4th and Popular. Gone now. Tore down to make way for a Sambo's Restaurant. Jimmy moved to South Hutchinson. This was the last I remember.
In my very young days (grade school days) I would imagine there were a lot more.
I really can't remember Charlie Pitts having race cars around his service stations.
Carl Curless, I can't remember having any race cars around either.
My first job besides mowing lawns was at Shep's Apco at 23rd and Main in Hutch. It reminds me of
these kinds of service stations. He paid me $1.00 an hour. This was 70/71 era. He even still had a 50/51 chevy service/tow truck in the bay. Wonder what ever become of that it was in excellent shape.

Warren & Brian,...I had a Conoco Station (& a drive in resturant) from May 1958 to Jan 1967. The picture of my first race car (the flat head Ford) was taken in front of the office door. There is a 7 up machine between that door & the first overhead door. I built 4 of my cars in the second stall. Luther

Wish my Granpa was a bit more like you, he made my Dad and Uncle work on their cars across the road beside an old rundown house. Had cows out there too and they didn't mind leaving souvineers. Sometimes when a man crawled underneath a race car, he had to be careful as to where he put his head.

Luther i remember that service station you had it was cool.Thinking about it there were alot of cars built at or sponsered by stations just like that. I remember in Tulsa on Friday and Saturday you would see a race car setting at a station before the races,i remember some in KC and alot around Joplin. You sure dont see that anymore. This makes me want to look at the scrap books because i got alot of pictures of cars setting at stations.
Also in the good ol days the tracks would have pictures of the cars in the programs setting buy there local sponsers ,,many of them were sevice stations like that. Many tracks dont even have much of a program anymore.
I wonder if that Station you had is still there ,,everytime i drive by the Drexel exit on 71 hwy i always look down that road ,,i may turn and go take a look see next time.
Win as if you are use to it.And lose as if you enjoyed
it for a change. Its hard to get to the top and alot
harder to stay there.

Tim,...The station has been vacant for many years. I built it in early 58 (after I sold the milk route) & built the drive in that fall. I sold them in early 67 after going to work at the post office. A dinning room was added to the drive in & eventually the two buildings were connected, It was last used as a tavern & pool parlor. An early day sports bar. It is not worth driving out of your way to see,...Luther
