the splined axle didnt replace the tapered axle, they were both avalible at the same time for many[20+] years.the first splined axles I remember were already old pieces in the mid 1960s and new tapered rear ends could still be bought into the 90s. those of us that ran the tapered rears were thankful Nance continued to make parts for them after Halibrand stopped.still remember pulling those m.... f.... hubs off!!think there is still a socket in my tool box machined down to fit those hub nuts.ran both 2" and 3" taper rears, think I even had one of Nances 2 1/2 axles

p.s. be aware if you are restoring an old rear there were 2 different spline counts for the 3" rear -42 splines which is most common and still used today-but you can run into 21 spline axles tougher to find parts for[think those counts are correct-its late]

Thanks for the info oldtom.I didn't realize the splined axles were around that long ago. What type of birdcage/carrier bearing set-up would a splined axle around 1975 vintage have used?

bearing carrier would look about the same as a tapered rear-two piece cast housing holding a large bearing and a couple of seals.would have an 8 bolt pattern on the backside to bolt on the birdcage-this pattern was the same for 3"splined or 3" tapered rear.2" bearing carrier had a smaller 8 bolt pattern.birdcage itself would vary from builder to builder.looking at an old copy of a speedway motors catalog will give you lots of photos.btw,an older splined axle will have a threaded area between the drive splines and the bearing area.you threaded on a narrow retaining nut that held the bearing carrier and birdcage to the axle-didnt take racers long to figure out that the wheel nut held it all together anyway.by the time I started seeing splined axles the retaining nut had the threads ground out turning it into nothing more than a spacer.not long after you quit seeing the threaded part on new axles
